4 Quick Sites That Let You Check if Links Are Safe Posted: 07 Jan 2010 05:31 PM PST Whether you’re accessing popular social networking sites or other communication apps such as your webmail portal and IM clients, the links let you dive into a world of new information. With one click, you may end up enjoying a great story, or on the other hand unfortunately trying to crawl your way out of a potentially harming website. You may have your anti-virus and malware removal tools programs installed, but they will not prevent you from clicking any of those potentially-harmful-but-so-interestingly-looking Twitter, Facebook or email links. Even if you have security toolbars and add-ons installed, the following online tools may help you find out whether a website really is safe, especially if you would like to get a second opinion (e.g. you suspect the site’s review hasn’t been updated) or if you decide that you don’t need more add-ons slowing your browser’s performance.
Want An Analysis Of A Website’s Safety? Try McAfee’s SiteAdvisorWhen you first access McAfee’s SiteAdvisor, you may see more of SiteAdvisor’s software (a self-updating security toolbar that we covered before) than the web application that serves a similar purpose as the toolbar. Locate the textbox in the right sidebar under the heading of View a Site Report and enter your site’s URL. Besides the big sticker at the beginning of the report, SiteAdvisor reports the website’s online affiliations and has numerous community member reviews/ratings. As if that’s not enough, you can also view a detailed analysis that SiteAdvisor offers on another page because this is a long list of the downloads it encountered on the submitted website. SiteAdvisor tests whether these downloads are crapware. Norton’s SafeWebNorton’s SafeWeb initially provides a simple-looking site to check a website for threats. Upon displaying a site’s threat report, it shows a strong community presence in the form of reviews and ratings in the right sidebar. The actual Norton review starts with the green (site is safe), orange (caution is advised), red (unsafe site) or grey (untested) icon, followed by the threat report, that includes the results of 17 different malware tests. For certain sites, Norton’s SafeWeb also reports information of e-commerce safety (whether the site encrypts transactions and has a privacy policy). Find more details on our SafeWeb article. Want To Report A Suspicious Site? Jump to Phishtank!Phishtank can help you decipher whether a site is phish which, according to the site, is a fraudulent attempt to steal the site visitor’s information. If you sign up to be a registered user, you can also submit a phishing site and also verify other users’ reported phishing sites. Just Want To Know If A Site Is A Go Or No-Go?If you are only interested in knowing whether a site is safe and want to skip the details of the analyses, Online Link Scan collects and summarizes the threat reports of the aforementioned Phishtank, AVG and Google Safe Browsing engines. It paints a clear and simple picture of whether a site is clean. What is not as simple are the number of ads surrounding the textbox and summary chart. Relevant Bookmarklets & AddonsIf you use Twitter constantly, then you probably get lots of shortened links to other sites. For your browser’s safety, you should check out our article on LongURLPlease’s bookmarklet and Firefox addon that reveals the location of shortened URLs. Also, check out these great Twitter tips to help your identity remain protected. If you’re more of an IM person, swing by our IM security hacks post. If you often Google random topics, you may face a lot of new websites with promising names that sometimes sound too good to be true. If so, you may benefit from browser addons that will warn and stop you from entering potentially unsafe sites: AVG’s Linkscanner (browser addon that highlights potential threats) and WebOfTrust (featured along with eight, and ten other great security and privacy addons). Do you know of another web app that scans sites for malware? Feel free to tell us in the comments. Did you like the post? Please do share your thoughts in the comments section! New on Twitter ? Incredible Bookmarks – Add Some Smarts To Your Firefox Bookmarks Posted: 07 Jan 2010 03:31 PM PST Mozilla lists around 844 bookmark add-ons for Firefox. One would think that's a choice too many. But ask a download buff and he would shout – 'Bring 'em on!' That's what we download junkies search for…an app that does a better job. Maybe, it's around the next download. Incredible Bookmarks for Firefox is one among those bookmark add-ons for Firefox. In the next few lines we will try to discover if it stands apart from its brethren. If it does, it will certainly deserve the 'Incredible' conditioner. The download page hints that the add-on is highly regarded. Great, neat and nice are the words bandied about.
The Incredible Bookmarks for Firefox add-on installs as a 41KB file. By default it makes an appearance as a toolbar on the top of the browser window. Just the loss of screen real estate might not make this add-on worth it for some, so the add-on has to really step up to the plate with its features. Firefox does have a default bookmark toolbar of its own. Many choose to keep it hidden from view. Think of Incredible Bookmarks as an enhanced version. And it too can be unchecked and dismissed from view from its own menu or from View – Toolbars (and restored in the same way). Note that Incredible Bookmarks does not replace the default Firefox bookmarks toolbar.
With the bookmark tool installed, let's check out some of its features… View More Than One Bookmark ToolbarIncredible Bookmarks for Firefox lets you add additional toolbars. While minimalists will balk at this encroaching on screen estate, consider this – you can create different toolbars to improve your workflow. For instance, one toolbar can address work related links while the other can be for personal use or entertainment. Switch on the visibility as per the browsing needs. The additional toolbars can be selectively switched on or off from the View – Toolbars menu. Also they can be easily removed. View Bookmarks By Folder Or By Search TermThe toolbar can be filled with bookmarks according to a root folder or a subfolder. Additionally, if your bookmarks are a bit disorganized, you can key in some keywords and the toolbar gets automatically filled up. With keywords you can create dynamic bookmarks on the fly. View & Order Bookmarks By Name, Visit Time, Last Visit & Most VisitedAnother plus for quick organization is the ability to order and re-order the bookmarks in each toolbar according to alphabetized names, visit times, last visit and the most visited. For instance, when you have a bunch of bookmarks it's easy bring the most frequented ones forward by checking the Most Visited option. View Color Coded BookmarksAdd a double plus for the bookmark color coding property. Right click on a bookmark and select a palette of colors from Highlight Bookmarks. Colors as visual indicators can immediately draw the eye to a highlight bookmark. For instance, you can color code bookmarks according to relevance. And Finally…Remove Duplicates & Dead LinksWatching for bookmark updates and removing the dead links should be the default role of any bookmark tool and Incredible Bookmarks doesn't fail here. It can also weed out pages which end up as 'File Not Found' or 'Server Not Found'. What you get is a cleaner bookmark folder. For instance, you can set one toolbar to display all your bookmarks and then clean those through in one go. If you have a bookmark organization fetish, you must have tried out a few of the Mozilla bookmark add-ons. If you are still waiting to arrive at Incredible Bookmarks, then jump the queue. Incredible Bookmarks is a well conceived package. The only gripe you could have is with the loss of the screen space. But that's a slight loss when you stack it up against the help. Download Incredible Bookmarks from Visibotech or from the Mozilla Add-ons page. You can also watch two tutorial videos of the bookmark app in action (Basics Tutorial or Advanced Tutorial). So, does the add-on deserve the 'Incredible' adjective? Let us know… Did you like the post? Please do share your thoughts in the comments section! Related posts

Choose Between Nofollow & Dofollow With Lucia’s Linky Love Posted: 07 Jan 2010 11:31 AM PST If you are a blogger and have been for any time, you know how it is to get spam in your comments section. What is the point to the spam and what exactly do they get out of it? Well, one benefit a spammer gets is “link juice.” In other words, the more your site is linked to on other sites, the more “important” it seems in Google’s eyes. Everyone wants to be important to one of the most popular search engines on the Internet, right? Well, spammers know and understand this principle and will spam as many sites as possible by putting links to their sites in comment sections on blogs all over the Internet. That was of course until Google came up with the “nofollow” attribute. Now, putting just a tiny bit of code in each link will eliminate any kind of benefit the link would have won in Google’s eyes.
Now Wordpress has the “nofollow” attribute automatically inserted into every user generated link (ie. in comment sections, etc.). Has this totally stopped comment spam? No. It has at least taken some of the appeal out of spamming though. A spammer still likes his links in comment sections in case they’ll be clicked, but the Google “juice” is out of the picture. The issue then comes in when you have actual people commenting on your blog without gaining any authority with Google for the links back to their sites. I already wrote about CommentLuv as a way to encourage commenting on your blog. What if you could also offer some Google “juice” to encourage commenting even more? BUT if you get rid of the “nofollow” attribute you’re opening yourself up to all kinds of spam. Well, this was true until Lucia’s Linky Love came along. Lucia’s Linky Love does a service by making the first comments by a visitor “nofollow” BUT after commenting a specific number of times they become “dofollow”. In other words, a passing spammer won’t get any love, but a repeat commenter, which is WAY more likely to be a real person and regular reader, WILL get the love. Let’s take a look at the features according to the website:
In Summary, We Have Two Opposing Options – Nofollow & Dofollow:1. Nofollow – Gives comment spammers one less reason to bombard your blog with comment spam. However, real readers don’t get the link juice they deserve. 2. Dofollow – Your faithful and wonderfully loved regular readers not only get to share their input in your comment sections, but they also get some Google juice when their blogs are linked to from within the comments. However, spammers ALSO like the link juice and will take full advantage. BUT – there IS a third option! 3. Lucia’s Linky Love Wordpress plugin – Block the link juice for the one-timers (spammers, etc.) but let it flow for repeat visitors when they regularly comment. Can you guess what my choice would be? NOTE: The developer may not be keeping this plugin up so if issues arise you may have to deal with them yourself. What do you think? Does the “nofollow” attribute really still matter today? If it does, what do you do about the issue? Have you tried Lucia’s Linky Love yet? Did you like the post? Please do share your thoughts in the comments section! Related posts
How To Troubleshoot When Skype Has No Video [Windows] Posted: 07 Jan 2010 10:31 AM PST We all use certain productivity and communication tools that become an integral part of our everyday life. For me, one of those tools is Skype, and in 2005 when Skype 2.0 introduced the video calling feature, I was pretty excited. Of course, that excitement was short-lived until a year or two later when more of my friends started buying newer laptops and computers with built-in webcams. Today, just about everyone has a simple camera integrated into their computer or phone that they can use with Skype video conferencing. Occasionally, a friend or colleague seems to have some difficulty configuring their video to work properly with the Skype software when there was no video stream displaying, so I’ve decided to put together a short list of some of the most common problems that cause Skype to have no video stream from either your webcam or from the person you’re calling.
Does Skype Have No Video? A Few Things To Check Out.Before we get started, there are a few very simple reasons why Skype may have no video in your particular setup. Before you even start working through this guide to troubleshoot your problem, make sure that you’re not attempting to make the video call to a mobile phone or landline. Seems silly, I know, but I’ve seen cases where people think they can Skype call someone with a mobile phone because the phone has a camera – that’s not the case. First, download the latest version of Skype for either Windows, Mac or Linux. This will ensure that you have the latest bug fixes and patches installed. For that matter, if you’re having a problem with the video stream from the person you’re trying to call, make sure they have the latest version of Skype as well! 1. Check Your DriversWhile you may not think it’ll make a difference, the latest version of the driver for your particular webcam could include updates that handle some of the methods that Skype software uses to access your webcam video stream. In particular, if you’re having problems with Skype having no video, you’ll want to make sure that your device supports at least DirectShow 9.1 standard. Check with the manufacturer website of your webcam for the latest driver update, and of course doing a Windows update can’t hurt (usually). Check your current driver version by going into the device manager. For most versions of Windows, that’s in the Control Panel (classic), System, and Device Manager. Hopefully, there’s no yellow exclamation mark on the webcam, because if so then your issue is a resource conflict with another device. Fixing that is beyond the scope of this article, but it would at least indicate your Skype no video problem. If things appear fine, then right-click on your webcam device and select “properties” and then click on the driver tab. Here, you can see the driver date, and if it’s fairly old (as mine is), you may want to click on “Update Driver” and search the Internet for the latest version. Checking the Copyright under “Driver Details” will also provide you with the name of the company that wrote the software, so you can download the latest driver version yourself if you need to. You’ll also want to try downloading the latest version of DirectX as well (you’ll need at least version 9.0 for Skype video to work). Click on Run and in the command prompt type “dxdiag” to double check your DirectX version. 2. Make sure Skype is configured properly. If updating your drivers don’t seem to fix your video problem in Skype, then it might be a good idea to just double check your Skype video settings to be sure that they’re set up properly. When you have Skype open, click on Tools and Options. You’ll find the video settings under either General or Calls. If you see a screen like the one above, then you know that’s the problem! Skype isn’t configured to recognize your installed webcam. The first thing to try is simply starting up the software that came with your webcam and using it to switch your webcam on (or if your webcam has a hardware switch, turn it on.) Once you make sure the cam is turned on you may have to restart Skype for it to recognize your active webcam. Go back into the preferences screen. Even though your webcam video is now displayed, don’t celebrate yet! Take a look at the two settings underneath your webcam video. If “Automatically receive video” is set to “no one,” it may be more difficult to receive the video stream from your friend. Change it to people in your contact list. Also, under “Show that I have video to,” change it from no one to “people in my Contact list.” While these settings shouldn’t affect your ability to have a video chat, setting them to people in your Contact list can make initiating a video chat far easier. If you click on “Webcam settings,” you may see something off or disabled, but the odds are pretty good that the default settings here should all be okay. 3. Make Sure You Aren’t Hidden.Once you start attempting another video chat with your friend, make sure that “Hide myself” or “Stop My Video” is not selected. The option depends on the version of Skype you’re using, but either way if it’s accidentally selected, then obviously your video stream will be blank. If your friend’s stream is blank rather than yours, ask them to right click on their blank video window and check that setting. Yes, sometimes it’s that simple! 4. Make Sure Other Programs Aren’t Using Your Webcam. If you’ve got to this point and you still can’t seem to get Skype to display any video streams, an easily overlooked item is whether there are already other applications running in the background that could be capturing the data stream from the webcam already. There are more applications today than ever before that now integrate the webcam, such as many of the most popular Instant Messengers and even the latest version of many Internet browsers. If your webcam is one that’s enabled by software and the light was on even before you ran the webcam software to start it, or even before you started Skype, that could be a clear sign something is already running that’s using your webcam, and Skype won’t be able to. Try closing down all of your windows, especially any other IM and other Internet applications, and then restart Skype again. If all else fails – it’s very possible that you (or your friend) could have an older webcam that just isn’t compatible with the Skype software. Skype actually has an entire section of its online marketplace set aside for Skype-compatible webcams. As a last resort, you might just want to replace your outdated cam with a new one that is guaranteed to work! Have you ever had problems getting Skype to display video? Did any of the tips above help, or did you fix it using another approach? Share your own Skype video nightmare story in the comments section below. Did you like the post? How To Back Up Data From Computer That Won’t Boot Posted: 07 Jan 2010 09:31 AM PST Recently I have been on a spree of fixing unbootable OS’s for friends and family. A surprising fact that I discovered was that many of them were ready to reformat and perform a fresh Windows install, if only they could just backup their music, photos and the likes. So here I am with a piece on how to back up hard drive data on your computer when the operating system won’t boot. The easiest most hassle-free way to achieve our objective is to use a Live CD. Period. Forget about all other ways and all the advice you get. If you have a functional CD drive and a Live CD or can arrange one then this is the way to go bro. You won’t regret it.
A Live CD, if you don’t already know, allows you to run an Operating System from your CD drive. There are lot’s of Live CD’s available on the Internet. A large number of Linux distributions are available as Live CD’s. Just pop them in, make a few choices and you get a complete OS on the fly with no changes to your data on the hard disk. You can do pretty much anything from there in, even update a status or two on Twitter/Facebook while waiting for the file transfers to finish. Here are a few Live CD suggestions if you care for one:
How would you burn a disc when the freaking operating system won’t boot? My apologies if you are reading this after the problem has occurred. I am afraid you would have to ask a friend to create a Live CD for you or you can use another computer if you have access to one. That being said, it is always a nice thing to prepare a couple of them beforehand for the rainy day. I say a couple of them because 1) most of them are free and 2) you never know if one of them decides it doesn’t like your video adapter (for example) and refuses to boot. The links listed above will let you download an ISO file. Next step is to burn the ISO file to a disc. Here is a list of our favorite disc burning software to help you along.
What If The CD Drive Is Broken Or Not Available?A very valid scenario indeed, specially with the ultra thin laptops and netbooks these days. In such a case you can either use a USB CD drive or what we would call a Live USB stick. We have written about how you can create a Live USB from an ISO file or even from an installer CD. One thing to keep in mind is that some old computers just cannot boot from the USB drive. Set The Boot Device PriorityBefore your computer can boot from either a CD or a Live USB drive you might have to change the boot device priority from the computer’s BIOS settings. This is not as scary as it sounds. Follow along:
We Are SetNow restart the computer with the Live CD inside the tray and the computer should pick up the contents of the CD and load the contained operating system. You will get a fully functional system once the OS boots up. The Live OS should automatically detect your hard disk and list the various partitions as drives. From here on you can use the computer just as you would use it normally and you can easily back up the required files. You would of course need an external media like an external USB disk or a USB flash drive depending upon the amount of data that you want to back up. Just copy the required files to the destination as usual. When you are done, just shut down the computer, take out the hard disk and now you are ready to format the computer or attempt any other fixes without worrying about the precious data on the hard drive. Have you been in a similar situation before? How did you recover your important files and restore the system? We would love to hear and learn from your experiences. Did you like the post? 4 Methods To Monitor & Manage Running Processes on Mac Posted: 07 Jan 2010 08:31 AM PST Have you ever wondered why there are times where your computer suddenly runs slower even though you have only opened one or two applications? It seems that the phrase “more than meets the eye” applies not only to a bunch of transforming robots, but also very true to describe the running processes on a Mac. There are many things unknown that lurk behind the scenes. The ability to monitor everything that’s happening inside is especially useful for those with slower machines. They need all the juice they can get. Running applications – even if they are in the background waiting – eat up system resources. Hours are wasted everyday just waiting for the computer to repeatedly get back to its senses. It would be very nice if you could know all the running processes on a Mac, pause the ones that you currently don’t need, and force some of them to quit if you need to.
An Ounce Of Prevention Is Better Than A Pound Of CureSometimes people think they know what’s best for us. That’s why there are applications that take the liberty to add themselves to the startup list even though the users do not ask them to. What’s even worse, some do this quietly without letting the users know. So it’s no surprise if there are suddenly tons of applications appearing at start up. The first step in taking control of the running processes on a Mac is to filter these self-added applications. You can do this in Mac by going to the Accounts Preference pane. Open System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items and you can delete the ones that you don’t need by selecting them and press the minus (-) button. Monitor The MadnessMac OS X also provide its users with tools to monitor all the running applications called Activity Monitor (Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor). Upon opening, you’ll see everything, along with other necessary information like the amount of memory used, percentage of utilized CPU power, number of threads, etc. This is the window display when I consciously open only one application – Firefox. Quickly Quit Or PauseQuitting an application is simply pressing “Command + Q” or going to the “Quit” menu. But as a last resort – when your system has become unresponsive with all the open applications, you could force some applications to quit using Activity Monitor. Just select them from the list and press the “Quit Process” button. You could also terminate major applications via Force Quit Applications window. Press “Command + Option + Escape” to summon the window. But forcing the application to quit is not always the only answer. You can also try to pause the inactive applications and give the computational power to the applications that you are currently use. Later on, when you want to use those halted apps, you can easily activate them again. This method is perfect for applications that take up a large amount of system resources, but you need them all the time and the process of quitting and relaunching them will take too long. Something like Firefox with lots of open tabs. I couldn’t find any native Mac OS X way to pause/unpause applications. But I found an application called Pauser that can do it. It’s an old application, but it works just fine under Snow Leopard. Pauser will reside in the menu bar. To pause any application, click on the icon and choose the application from the list. Clicking the item again from Pauser list will unpause it. The paused application will be in the not-responding state and take zero amount of CPU processing power. Unfortunately, pausing an application will not free the memory used by it. Here are the comparisons beween active and paused Firefox. Here are a couple of articles related to Activity Monitor you might want to check out: Macnifying OS X: Learning To Utilize Activity Monitor on Mac and atMonitor – A System Monitor On Steroids [Mac]. If you know another alternative to Pauser, please share using the comments below. Image Credit: andresrueda Did you like the post? Please do share your thoughts in the comments section! The Best Mugshot Websites To Check Out Your Criminal Side Posted: 07 Jan 2010 07:31 AM PST Bored are you? Maybe you are looking for a way to pass the time. And what better way to amuse yourself then looking at people who have gone over to the dark side so to speak. Of course I am talking about looking at people's mugshots online! Famous and common people alike. And yes you will see peoples mugshots in this article like JayZ, Jim Morrison and Paris Hilton! The first mugshot website is Google's winner of the popularity contest because of it's name. MugShots.com has a lot of mugshots of wanted people from all over the world. They are not glamorous, they are not cool but hey maybe you have seen one in your hometown? Maybe that killer and drug czar is working in your home depot! Who knows? But if you never see them you won’t recognize them when you do!
I started off my mugshot website journey here at Mugshots. It is a simple site with peoples mugshots and not much else. You can find colorful comments left by people just like you. Who doesn't want to ridicule the people down on their luck? Nah I'm just kidding but you can still peruse the mug shots. When you arrive at the site you will see some shots and categories.
You can click on a category and look through the ones that tickle your fancy. They even have a Mugshot Maker that runs on Java to really let you see your dark side! You can access that here. You have to conform your image to their specifications which is the file needs to be – at most – 300 x 400 pixels. It also needs to be in JPG/GIF Format. You also have to have Java running on your machine. Lots of requirements to be a fake criminal huh? Well moving on, let's take a look at some of the most wanted criminals: Then from there I clicked on one of the links and got this guy, looks pretty bad. If you read through the comments you will see what they did. Look at what this guy did:
You can continue looking around at other categories but when you get tired of seeing all the joe schmoes out there then we can turn to the second mugshot website for more famous people. The second site is The Smoking Gun’s section of their website titled Mugshots. You can find that page at this link. When you arrive at the site you will see a screen that looks like this: Awesome – right off the bat I see people like OJ Simpson, Jay Z, Eminem and Jim Morrison! Let's check them out… Here is Jim Morrison's mug shot from 1970 after he exposed himself at that concert: Next up is a little more recent. Here is Jay Z aka Sean Carter, rapper and previous owner of Rocawear clothing. He was arrested back in 1999 for allegedly stabbing a record executive. JayZ – who would have thunk it? And how about Paris Hilton – We couldn't leave her out. Check her out in this mugshot below: She got arrested in 2007 for violating her probation. Yeah she went to jail for a hot second. But she still looks pretty good in her mugshots! Do you have a favourite mugshot website for looking at mugshots? If so, let us know about it in the comments. Related posts |
