3 Laptop Computer Temperature Monitor Apps That Could Save Your Hard Drive Posted: 03 Jul 2010 03:30 PM PDT Overheating is one of the leading causes of hard drive failure. Other symptoms such as slowness, unresponsive programs and crashes and random reboots can sometimes be attributed to overheating as well. When a processor fails, it is an expensive repair. However, when a hard drive fails, the costs of losing your data can be much, much higher. So what can you do to protect your laptop? Here are a few tools that could help you.
Real TempReal Temp is a comprehensive monitor that reads temperature information from all Intel Core processors and even allows you to calibrate the sensors for each individual CPU in dual- or quad-processor machines. And unlike many other sensors, it works equally well on laptops and desktops. Real Temp runs without installation being necessary. It can just be extracted to a folder or external drive and run directly from those places. It comes preset with default max temperatures for each configuration, which can be easily adjusted; and also with an option for an alarm to go off if the temperature reaches dangerous levels. Core TempCore Temp is one of the sensors that encompasses most of Intel's and AMD's CPUs, and it works on Windows XP Service Pack 2, 2003 Server, Vista and Windows 7 (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions). One of the useful tools includes the ability to log your information, which is very helpful when analyzing the temperature of the laptop over long periods of time and detect whether some fluctuations are normal or a sign of trouble. SpeedFanSpeedFan is a lightweight and reliable temperature monitor, which has the added bonus of also monitoring (as the name suggests) the speed of the fans, since they are an important part of the health of your computer. It can be set to monitor your hard drive's temperature, the CPU temperature and the general internal temperature of the computer. SpeedFan is an interesting program that allows you to do a lot but it doesn’t work on every laptop model due to the fact that the fans on every laptop are configured differently. In some models, the temperature is available but most other functions are not. In spite of that, it does serve as a reliable monitor for the internal temperature of the computer even when some of the other features are not available; and a good detection system to warn you when certain problems arise. It can be set to run on startup and sound an alarm if the temperature gets too high. There are many computer issues that are difficult to diagnose and correct, but thankfully, high temperatures isn't one of them. It should be one of the things to check if you start experiencing sluggishness and hard drive errors. All it takes is a little bit of attention and one of the programs above, and the problem can be corrected before it becomes an issue. Have you experienced overheating? What kind of symptoms did you experience? How did you fix it? Let us know by writing a comment below. Hey Facebookers, make sure to check out MakeUseOf page on Facebook. Over 24,000 fans already! How to Use the New YouTube Video Editor Posted: 03 Jul 2010 10:30 AM PDT Now, that has changed. YouTube has released the first version of the YouTube Video Editor. This editor honestly doesn’t have a huge amount of functionality, but it does let you accomplish a few things which you couldn’t previously accomplish on YouTube.
Cropping VideosCropping a video is one of the most basic and most often used features of any video editing software. Chances are that if you’re looking to publish on YouTube, you aren’t aiming to reach Hollywood level quality. You just need to make sure that you edit out the parts of the video which make you look dumb. To crop a video, the first thing you need to do is drag and drop the video you want to edit into the video editing section, which is represented by a video icon. Now you need to hover your cursor over the thumbnail of your video in the edit section. A scissor icon will appear over the thumbnail. Click on that, and you’ll open the edit view. In order to crop the clip, you need to click on either of the white bars to the left or right of the timeline, then drag the bar over. This will highlight part of your video clip’s timeline in white. The white part of the clip is what is being cropped out. Click on Save. This will save your edit in the YouTube video editor, but won’t save it to YouTube. To do that, you need to click on the Publish button in the upper right hand corner of the editor. Before you do that, though, be sure to give your edited video a name! Splicing VideosSplicing two videos together is extremely easy with the YouTube Video Editor. Just drag and drop the thumbnails of both videos into the edit section, then publish the video. That is literally all you have to do. Just keep in mind that YouTube Video Length limits still apply. You may need to crop out part of a video and then place it into a seperate YouTube video. Adding and Editing AudioAdding audio has become a popular feature in YouTube. It makes it easy to add a sort of theme song to your video clips. This is very useful if you have a clip where the sound isn’t really applicable to what is happening on the video, or the sound is simply unintelligible. Better to have your viewers listening to music than a much of gobbly-gook, right? The YouTube Video Editor includes an Audioswap library search function which lets you browse through the entire Audioswap library on YouTube. This can be accessed by opening the Audio tab of the YouTube Video Editor. You browse by Genre and Artist or you can try and find your favorite artist by using the search function. Audioswap is still a fairly limited library, but there is usually an appropriate track available. Once you’ve found the track that you want to use you can choose it by either clicking the plus icon at the right or by dragging and dropping the track from the Audio tab to the audio edit section at the bottom of the YouTube Video Editor. That’s It, For NowThese basic functions are all that the YouTube Video Editor can handle, at least for now. Their inclusion is very useful, as it helps chop up videos into sizes which are YouTube friendly and also makes the addition of audio quicker and easier. Hopefully the functionality of the YouTube Video Editor will only be expanded with time. Have you used it? Any special features you’d like to share? Do you like MakeUseOf articles?
