How Can a DoS Attack Take Down Twitter? [Technology Explained] Posted: 25 May 2010 06:30 PM PDT Social networking sites are among some of the most often visited and widely used on the Internet. Because of this, sites like Twitter and Facebook have to worry about DoS attacks like other important websites. Twitter has fallen victim to DoS attacks in the past, causing the site to run extremely slow or go down entirely. But, how?
What is a DoS Attack?I explained briefly the intent of a DoS attack, but what is it technologically? A DoS attack happens when a large number of hijacked computers overwhelm a website by sending it a massive, constant stream of data. A basic site like Twitter, which is used to processing requests and displaying a simple page, has trouble keeping up with this massive flow of information due to this large spike in requests. In a typical connection, a user sends a message for the server to authenticate. After the server acknowledges and approves this request, the user can then access the site from the server. In a DoS attack, several authentication requests are sent, filling the server up. The server tries to approve these requests, but it can’t because they all have false return addresses. So the system waits. After a minute or so, these connections are closed, but by this time, the attacker has already sent a new batch of requests, slowing up the system indefinitely. Using Botnets for DoS AttacksA botnet is a collection of compromised computers that can be used for malicious acts (like spam) on the Internet. Botnet-based DoS attacks are difficult for websites to deal with. This is because it is hard to distinguish legitimate requests from those coming from a botnet. From Twitter’s perspective, you can’t just block the IP addresses of offending users in this situation because the computers being used might belong to legitimate users. Cutting such users off would only further complicate things. [Note]: You can drastically reduce the chances of your computer being hijacked by maintaining anti-virus and firewall protection. You don’t want to be partially responsible for the next attack on your favorite website! Twitter DoS AttackYou can monitor Twitter’s status here. Twitter has always been criticized for running too slowly at times or having significant downtime. They have spent a lot of time fixing these issues and becoming stronger structurally, but with millions of users to account for, a denial-of-service attack can (and has) cripple Twitter for its users. Twitter is different from most sites in that much of its use comes through its application programming interface (API), which allows software (e.g. TweetDeck) to have access to its service. When a Twitter DoS attack occurs, users on the site experience longer loading times and slowness, while users of third-party applications experience timeouts. Some of your requests might fail, causing you to be unable to post an update or follow someone. ConclusionTwitter DoS attacks will more than likely continue to happen in the future. As the company grows older, it should become better equipped at dealing with such attacks. Now that you know what a denial-of-service attack is, you can begin taking notice of such activities on the Internet. So the next time your favorite site is running a bit slow, keep in mind that it might not be their fault. What thoughts do you have on this matter? Do you have anything to add to the article? I’d love to hear your opinions below. Image Credit: carlsilver, -= Trevino =- NEW: Download MakeUseOf iPhone App. FREE! Similar MakeUseOf Articles
6 Cool Android Apps to Make Use Of Sensors on Your Phone Posted: 25 May 2010 04:30 PM PDT In addition to these sensors, there are also more practical things that you may want to know about the status of your Android phone and the network and the environment where it is located. To this end, I decided to go out in search of some more cool Android apps that integrate with your phone’s sensors to provide you with some interesting information about the status of your phone.
Check GPS Satellite StatusMany GPS-enabled Android apps simply connect to GPS satellites and initiate the application with your location. However, there are times when you may want to know what the status of your phone’s GPS system is – such as how many satellites are transmitting, your current GPS directly and location and more. The GPS Status app taps into your GPS receiver and provides you with all of that information in a very cool graphical format. The app displays everything all in one screen – the magnetic field, your current position including pitch/title, your compass direction and of course the location of satellites. It’s actually very cool to watch the location of the satellites as they slowly move across the sky. Check Your Battery Juice With JuicePlotterHave you ever wondered where all your battery power is going? Curious what your charge and discharge pattern looks like? One awesome tool that may help you troubleshoot when and why your battery is getting drained is JuicePlotter. JuicePlotter tracks and plots the history of your battery level, allowing you to review when your battery was nearly fully charged, how quickly it drained and when you recharged the battery. For testing purposes, I let my phone gradually drop from 80 percent down to about 20 percent. As you can see from the graph, it took the battery from 4am to 12am to drain down to that level – not bad! Obviously, unless you have something enabled that’s draining your battery more quickly, the shortening of this graph could represent a battery that needs replacement. Analyze Your NetworkOne common use for a mobile phone is to identify local Wi-Fi networks. The Android Market offers a number of cool Android apps that show the current speed, strength and even the volume of transmitted data for the Wi-Fi signals that your phone can connect to. The following are two of my favorite apps. The first is called NetCounter, and it simply displays a tally of the data transfer that took place over either your cellular line or your Wi-Fi connection. This is a cool way to keep track of your data transfer rates, especially if you don’t have an unlimited data plan through your cellular provider. Another cool app to tap into the status of your Wi-Fi signal is aptly called SpeedTest. The application lets you run a data transmission test to check the transfer speed of the current data network you’re connected to. When you fire off the test, you’ll see the dial launch as the system pings the remote server. Once the test completes, the dial rests on your current upload speed in kbps, and the application reports both your upload and download speeds resulting from the speed test. In addition to the data transfer speed of your current network, you might also want to know the general signal strength of the local Wi-Fi network. The Wifi Analyzer app provides a cool graphical display of the current strength of your Wi-Fi connection. The signal strength shown here was the strength of my home Wi-Fi network in dBm sitting across the house from my wireless router. As I walked across the house closer to where the router is located, the needle gradually worked its way up the scale. I was pretty impressed with how accurate the application appeared to be – every little movement I made either closer or further from the router resulted in a bounce of the display needle. Turn Your Android Into a Motion DetectorThe last app that I’d like to cover that makes use of the accelerometer (if your phone has one), is Seismo. This application basically senses every little shake or wobble of the phone, and plots it out on a graph. I produced the chart below by holding the phone steady, and then very gently bouncing the phone in intervals. The sensor was very sensitive, and caught every movement I made with the phone. I can think of a number of uses for this application that would really come in handy. In any situation where you need to determine if an object or a flat surface is wobbling or shaking, all you’d have to do is lay your phone down flat on the object or surface and run this application. The motion gets logged and you can save the chart to a log file on your SD card. This is definitely one of my favorite apps for the Android. It’s especially useful for engineers, scientists or other researchers, but almost anyone may have the need for such a delicate measurement device at some point. At the very least, you can turn it on when you feel an earthquake coming on, and record the size of the quake! These examples are only a few of the many cool Android apps out there that tap into your Android phone system sensors and report back with data. Do you know of any other cool apps that provide phone or network status? Can you think of any other cool uses for any of these apps? Share your thoughts in the comments section below. How To Add Your Business To Google Maps Posted: 25 May 2010 02:30 PM PDT One of the major reasons it is essential to have some sort of online presence is because you need your business to be found. And where do people go when they need to find something? Google of course! Personally, when I am looking for some type of business I usually head to Google Maps and run a search including the city and state (or even nearest address).
Notice that when you find the business in the search results that there is a “more info” link. It is this type of detailed listing that I am referring to. As a business owner, did you know you can now actually have some control as to what your business listing says about your business? Let me introduce you to what Google calls Google Places. The process is simple. Let’s go through it step by step.Go to Google Places, sign in with your Google account and click “Add new business.” Next, you will be asked to begin to enter your business’s details. This is mostly include location based information (address, etc.), contact information (like email, phone, web address), and descriptive information (a short description and categorization). Now you’ll be asked to give more details to be included in the listing. It is good for potential customers to know about your service location, hours of operation and payment options. You’ll also have the opportunity to include photos and even videos in your listing. The last part of the Google Places listing process is validating that all of this information is actually coming from the owner of the business being listed. You can either choose to validate by phone or by postcard. Believe it or not, going the phone route would be a lot easier and faster. Google Places offers more!In this article, I have majored on how to take control of what information is in your business’s Google listing. You must also realize that Google Places also offers business owners other valuable tools such as printable coupons, and a dashboard full of statistics and trends helping you choose how to better meet the needs of your customers. As you know, Google has been listing businesses for easy finding for quite some time. Now business owners can have the control they need to maximize the benefits of Google, for free! What do you think of Google Places and the tools it offers? Can you think of any more simple ways to maximize the potential of online business listings? Follow MakeUseOf on Twitter. These online informational sex education resources are not meant to replace consultation with health care professionals. The Top 4 Sites To Find Free Printable Posters Posted: 25 May 2010 11:30 AM PDT We’ve talked about printing posters in the past, even reviewed multiple applications, like PosteRazor or Rasterbator, that can help you cut bigger posters up, and piece them together with regular-sized paper. Somehow we skipped the first installment; where to find suitable posters for printing? Google’s a good guess, but read on for MakeUseOf’s top 4 sites to find free printable posters.
Movie Poster ArchivePractically everyone has had a movie poster brandish his wall at some point in his life. I have trouble believing anyone who denies the fact. Apart from being often beautifully designed, movie posters carry a vibe and history that’s unknown to most other formats. Movie Poster Archive is, without doubt, the number one source for free printable movie posters. They offer an impressive selection of current and vintage movie posters. Admittedly, at 586 pixels width, these posters won’t soon pass a close-up inspection, but works perfectly fine for personal use. TypographicPostersThe second type of poster – closing in fast behind movie posters – are typographical. Typography is the art of arranging typefaces in an eye-pleasing manner. This site pulls in these typographic posters from 408 different directories, at the time of writing. Depending on the artist, this might be from a Portuguese anti-smoking campaign, or a Canadian festival line-up. No matter the concept, every single one proves to be an interesting work of art. You can browse the site in large or small raster views, or by category. If you know what you’re looking for, you can also use the built-in search pane. At about 910 pixels width, these posters are also of better printing quality. Poster-StreetPoster-Street is a very interesting site that offers free printable posters for every occasion; be it for work, school, or your home. The posters you find on Poster-Street are aimed at witty one-liners and entertaining compositions, but aren’t of the same visual quality as said posters above. Nevertheless, it offers a good source for decorating posters and conversation-starters. The resolution of these posters also far precedes most other online poster alternatives. In fact, most of the posters are vectored PDFs, and can be printed as large as you want, in crisp quality. TechPostersThis last site couldn’t be left out from a nerdy poster line-up. On TechPosters.NET, you’ll find a variety of nerdy posters to sire your wall. These range from simple sheet-cheats, to infographs, and witty internet ads. If you’re a fervent internet user or tech enthusiast, you’ll be delighted by the posters offered on this site. The resolution is highly dependent on the poster in question, because they’re pulled in from all over the web. In general, it’ll usually be between 500 and 1000 pixels wide, much like the other infographs you’ll see online. Do you have any other tips for finding free printable posters? Let us know in the comments section below! Hey Facebookers, make sure to check out MakeUseOf fan page on Facebook. Over 20,000 fans already! Similar MakeUseOf Articles
The 4 Best Free Wallpaper Apps for Your iPad Posted: 25 May 2010 10:30 AM PDT The screen resolution is 1024 by 786 pixels and any photo that size will work. But if you want access to stunning photos, design, and patterns for your iPad wallpaper use, there several free apps that provide lots of choices.
Wallpapers [iTunes Store link]The app I like the best is called appropriately and simply, Wallpapers. It features hundreds of full size images, including designs, nature photos, cartoons and Anime, and royalty stock photo type shots. The app contains a filter of all its categories, which include color, comedy, graffiti, universe, music, etc. There's so much to choose from in this app, it may be the only one you need. To use any photo as wallpaper, you simply click the save button, which saves your selection to the photo library of your iPad. In your photo library, select the image you want to save, tap the arrow button on the right side of the library. This will present you the option to use your selected image as your iPad wallpaper. This is how it's done for all the apps presented this review. You can also navigate to the iPad Settings app and select on Brightness & Wallpaper. Tap the arrow button which will take you to your photo library, from which you can select an image for iPad wallpaper use. Free Walls [iTunes Store link]Free Walls is another elegant collection of about 100 images, ranging from nature to cars, and various graphic designs. Images are not categorized but it's limited in number, thus you can easily browse and select the ones you want to save and use. 200+ Romantic Papers [iTunes Store link]Romantic Papers is a collection of romantic images that look like romance cards. Some images include a poem or romantic title. This app was originally developed for the iPhone and iPod touch, so the resolution of some images may not look as sharp on the iPad. But this should not keep you from downloading this free app. It's a perfect collection if you're planning to give an iPad as a gift to someone. Backgrounds HD [iTunes Store link]Backgrounds HD is a lot similar to Wallpapers. It features hundreds of images with categories including, Flowers, Beaches, Cars, Patterns, Music, Fantasy, Technology. You can also search images by artists. Many of the images seem to come from Flickr and DeviantArt group, in which you're invited to add your own image wallpaper to. Unless you're in the habit of changing your wallpaper four or five times a day, I would say that downloading these free apps should be more than enough to last you until you buy a second or third generation iPad. Using these apps makes adding images a lot easier than scouting them out on web sites and then having to import them to your iPad. Perhaps in future versions of the iPad, Apple will include a feature that automatically changes your wallpaper everyday or each time you wake it from sleep, as can be done on your Mac. Let us know if you discover other free iPad wallpaper apps or websites that iPad users should know about. Similar MakeUseOf Articles
10 Must-Have Toolbar Buttons for Thunderbird 3 Posted: 25 May 2010 09:30 AM PDT Thunderbird toolbar buttons provide one-click access to some of Thunderbird’s most useful features. In addition, there are buttons that add new functionality that you would otherwise miss out on. Here are 10 toolbar buttons for Thunderbird 3 that you must have!
1. Get all mailsThunderbird 3 does contain a Get Mail button. However, it takes two clicks to get mail for all your accounts. If you don’t ever check mails for just one account, you should get this button. It skips the selection and automatically fetches new mail from all your accounts. 2. Remove Duplicate Messages (Alternate)With this extension, you can search and remove duplicate messages. By clicking the little arrow in the bottom right, you can set the comparison criteria. These include author, recipients, CC list, status flags, message ID, numbers of lines in message, send time, size, subject, folder, and body. In the example below I picked author as the sole criteria. The extension searches all folders of one eMail account. 3. Mark All ReadSometimes you have this odd unread message in a random folder or you received a dozen eMails you just want to read later. Now you can skip searching or clicking each and every message, just hit the Mark All Read button. 4. Restart ThunderbirdThunderbird 3 provides a restart option only after installing a new addon. This button lays the decision when to restart Thunderbird into your hands or rather at the tip of your finger. 5. Exit ButtonTo properly close Thunderbird, you need to go through > File > Exit. Sure, closing Thunderbird via the Windows’ “close window” button is much quicker, but it rarely shuts the application down. Thunderbird will continue to run in the background. The Exit button puts the Exit option directly into your toolbar and saves you one click. 6. New Tab ButtonThunderbird 3 supports tabs. I’ve even listed the 5 Extensions For Tabbed Email Browsing in Thunderbird 3. If you enjoy using the internal Thunderbird browser, you will find the New Tab Button extension very useful. Be sure to have a look at the options for this extension. Here you can define where the button should be added, among other options. 7. XpungeThe Thunderbird profile folder tends to grow very large. In part that’s because eMail are never really deleted. If you want to make sure all your deleted eMails are really gone forever, you will have to compact your folders. Xpunge adds a toolbar button to empty the trash folder and compact folders in one or multiple accounts in one go. For more information about recovering eMails or compacting folders, check out the following articles:
8. Filter ButtonFilters are rules, based on which mails are sorted into different folders. This button lets you run your filters with one click. Also, check out How to Set Up Message Filters In Thunderbird. 9. Toolbar ButtonsTired of downloading one extension after another? Try this one, which comes with 50 buttons for Thunderbird and many more for Firefox and Sunbird. It contains a ton of super useful buttons. Moreover, the extension provides options to finetune its buttons. You can select which language the translate button should use, set a “favorite page”, toggle proxy, or set news and mail client paths. 10. Custom Buttons²Are you still missing certain buttons? Custom Buttons² allows you to convert bookmarklets into buttons or otherwise use it to build, maintain, import, and export custom toolbar buttons. In case you can’t be bothered or are lacking the skills, you can use this extension to import existing buttons provided on the Custom Buttons² website. Pick a button compatible with Thunderbird, > right-click the link to install the button, > copy the URL to your clipboard, then go back to Thunderbird and press the > Insert a Button² button in your toolbar. It will appear instantly. Which Thunderbird toolbar button is your favorite? Do you like MakeUseOf articles? Do share our articles with others! It’s really important to us. Use Gyazo For Instant Screenshot Sharing Online [Cross-Platform] Posted: 25 May 2010 08:31 AM PDT It does one thing, and it does it very well. It allows you to capture a screenshot with its crosshairs and it will automatically upload it to the web and copy its URL to your clipboard. Did I mention that it does not require any signing up? And how about this – Gyazo is a cross-platform app with support for Mac, Linux and Windows!
Let's check it out. You can start by visiting their English or Japanese site here and here respectively. Download the installer and get it installed. Once it is installed you can run it from the start menu. Then when you launch it, your mouse will turn into crosshairs like this: As you draw your box to select your screenshot you will see it covered in a light gray shade and the dimensions of the box will appear in the bottom left hand corner of your selection as you can see in the shot above. (note: I used Jing for these captures as it is the only thing that captures the mouse). Upon making your selection and releasing the mouse your screenshot is uploaded to the web. You will be shown the webpage in your default browser when it is ready. You can then copy and paste that URL to share it with friends or colleagues. The link that was returned was: http://gyazo.com/4aee403789e9ba4acb0d5e6b0e3509eb.png You can see it is stored on the Gyazo website and it has a PNG extension. You can download the image by right clicking on it and saving it. You can also use the 4 links that appear when you mouse over the upper left hand corner of your image to share your image. Gyazo supports Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr but you can hotlink or paste the URL of this image anywhere where you can insert an image. By hitting the Twitter logo button this is what happens: If you are not logged into Twitter you will be prompted for your password after you add your optional tweet and hit the post button. You can see how it looks in my twitter stream here. I do not have a Tumblr account but that is what the next button does: You need to enter your Tumblr authentication information and an optional caption. Hit the post button and it will posted to your blog. Personally I would have preferred Wordpress (if the author is listening, I would like to use it regularly on my Wordpress website). The last social network button is for Flickr: Click post and your image will be posted to your Flickr page. If you are not logged in you will be prompted to. The last button is for information. It pretty much just gives you the URL of your image and a link to the Gyazo website like this: Do you have a quicker way for sharing screenshots and images online?
