7 Cool Hacks & Cheats For Cafe World On Facebook

Posted: 18 May 2010 06:31 PM PDT

Cafe World is the latest and greatest Facebook game from the creators at Zynga. If you haven’t heard of Zynga, they’re the ones responsible for Farmville, Mafia Wars, and over a dozen other games that have millions of users and can be found on Facebook and other social sites.

Cafe World allows you to run a kitchen, cooking and serving food to others while leveling up and becoming the Iron Chef of your neighborhood. It’s pretty fun, but like most of these games, over time certain tasks can become pretty repetitive.

We’ve given you tips and cheats for Mafia Wars and 7 tricks to master Farmville in the recent past. Well I’ve scoured the web once again in search of tips, tricks, hacks, and cheats for Cafe World. Here are the Cafe World cheats I’ve found.

[Note]: A lot of the hacks I found require a program called Cheat Engine 5.5 to utilize. Since Zynga does not stand for this (I can tell by all the copyright claims I’ve seen) I will not be covering any of those. I’ll stick to the clean tips/tricks that won’t get your account banned, if you don’t mind.

1. Cook For Several

When you first start out in Cafe World, you only have 3 stoves and 3 counters to cook and serve with. This means that if you want to serve a lot of people, you should cook something that serves a lot of people. The Super Chunk Fruit Salad, for example, only takes 15 minutes to prepare, yet it serves 100 people. Remember, dishes that take longer to cook also get you more cash.

2. Table Placement Is The Key

Once you start cooking for several, dozens of people are going to flock to your restaurant. If you’re just beginning the Cafe World game, you are going to need to get some more tables and chairs in there as soon as possible. After all, you don’t want people leaving your restaurant in disgust because you couldn’t feed them in time.

Once you have purchased more tables and chairs, you need to place them strategically. The two best ways I’ve seen are in a U-shape and in rows with the counters blocking your cooks/servers in.

Trapping your servers causes the game to automatically serve everyone who is sitting down instantly. Also, with this configuration your tables are automatically cleared, saving you time. You won’t need to hire any extra help either, saving you money as well.

3. Door Placement Can Help Too

You want to strategically place multiple doors around your restaurant so as not to create a mess when people come in. They should be able to get to an empty seat, eat, and leave without a problem.

When you aren’t playing Cafe World, another cool Cafe World cheat is to remove the doors altogether. This way, no one can get in your restaurant while you’re gone, and you can keep your satisfaction rating from dropping.

To remove the doors, click Customize and drag them off the screen. They will then disappear. You can place them again when you are ready to re-open.

[Tip]: If you can’t remove the door, try blocking it in some way.

4. Plan For When You’re Away

When you stop playing the game and go to bed for the night, put on a dish that takes 12 hours to cook. This way, when you return to the game you’ll be ready to go with fresh food, allowing you to get things accomplished even in your sleep.

5. Gain Experience From Fast Foods

Once you’ve gained enough money to afford a few stoves, start cooking foods that take a short amount of time to prepare, say 5 minutes. If you need experience points fast, this is a quick and easy way to accomplish that.

6. Looking For Money? Visit Your Friends

A quick way to earn money is by visiting your friends’ restaurants. If you’re waiting for your food to be done, go visit all of your friends’ cafes every day and the coins will add up.

7. Clean Your Stove For Free

Tired of paying 15 coins every time you clean a stove? Instead of clicking the stove to clean it, a neat little Cafe World cheats is dragging it to your inventory. When you place the stove back in your cafe, it should be clean already.

Conclusion

I would like to note that some of these glitches are likely to be fixed sometime in the near future by Zynga, so if something I’ve listed here doesn’t work for you that could be the reason. For the most part, however, these tactics should be a good starting point for you to run a successful cafe.

As always, if you have any tips, tricks, or suggestions you would like to mention regarding Cafe World on Facebook, I’d love to hear your ideas below.

Keep a Perfect Car Maintenance Schedule With MyCar-Monitor

Posted: 18 May 2010 04:31 PM PDT

car maintenance scheduleHave you ever been driving along, looked up at your oil change sticker and cursed under your breath because you’re two months overdue for an oil change? Don’t you hate it when you want to buy a used car and the previous owner doesn’t have any records of his car maintenance schedule?

Here at MakeUseOf, we’ve covered a number of different car applications, such as websites or programs that help you to locate your parked car, or best places to rent or buy a car. Well, now you can maintain a perfect vehicle record without much effort, and never forget another scheduled maintenance again, with the MyCar-Monitor car maintenance schedule software.

MyCar-Monitor keeps a personal database of everything to do with your vehicles. That includes all completed car maintenance and repairs, all scheduled maintenance, and you can even keep records of your trips – including your total mileage and even fuel costs. The database is only as useful and accurate as the information that you put into it, but with software this convenient, putting the information into it is a breeze.

Setting Up Your Vehicles In MyCar-Monitor

When you first install and set up MyCar-Monitor, the software will quickly take you through a setup wizard where you set up a vehicle database for each car that you own. The software comes with free registration, all you have to do is offer your email address. The software suggests using the license plate number for each car, but you can give each database any unique name that you like, just give each individual car you own its own database.

car maintenance schedule

Once you’ve created the database, it’s time to fill out the basic information for your vehicle. This is sort of a car “profile” where you provide the make, model, year, purchase price and current value, and all of the other identifying information about this car. This is a good process to go through, because once you do then all of your vehicle information will be stored in one place, and you won’t have to search through your files for it.

car maintenance schedule

Once you’re through setting up one car, you can click on “Create a new vehicle database” to add more, or just click on “Open an existing vehicle database” to get started using the software.

scheduled car maintenance checklist

Once you’ve opened a particular vehicle database, then you have access to all of the areas – called modules – throughout the database. A few modules include fuel consumption, planned and completed maintenance, accident records, trip logs and more. You can create a main screen photo gallery with pictures of your car by clicking on the “gear” icon in the main panel.

scheduled car maintenance checklist

The real value of this software becomes apparent when you start exploring each of the modules. This isn’t your typical limited “free” software – this application lets you enter detailed records and information about every aspect of owning a car that you can imagine. No more struggling to maintain mileage log sheets for your business trips, just log all of your trips in the trip record. Need to keep a record of the fuel you had to purchase during the trip? Just click on “Fuel” and log each fillup purchase.

scheduled car maintenance checklist

The thing that I personally have the hardest time with is remembering to change my oil. The MyCar-Monitor offers a feature in the “Maintenance” section that lets you not only keep a log of any maintenance you’ve done on your vehicle, but you can also set up a car maintenance schedule for the service and use the software as a reminder tool so that you don’t forget anymore.

The software runs silently in the taskbar, so when the activity becomes due, it will set off an audible sound (of your choosing).

basic car maintenance schedule

While you can navigate through the software easily enough under the “Go To Module” group, if you don’t want to dig around to find the data entry form you need, just use the “Add Entry” area, which has them all grouped and easily accessible for you. Now, adding a fuel log, a reminder, or a maintenance log entry is as simple as opening the software and just double clicking on one of these shortcut links to the entry form.

basic car maintenance schedule

If that isn’t convenient enough, then there is also a huge assortment of shortcut icons at the top of the main screen as well. Every single module or entry form has an icon at the top, so once you memorize which icon links to the forms you use most often, all you have to double click on the icon and you’re there.

basic car maintenance schedule

Personally, my favorite part of this application is its ability to aggregate all of the raw data that you’ve entered into the database over time, and provide you with a nice, clean “summary report” that details your total fuel costs, maintenance costs, trip costs and more. There is no better way to quickly identify what aspects of owning your car are costing you the most.

Maybe you’re spending too much money on travel? Maybe there’s a recurrent maintenance problem that is consuming too much of your resources?  This printable summary report will tell you everything you need to know about your vehicle activity totals.

If you are diligent about entering your information into this software during the time you own your vehicle, it could actually increase the resale value of your car, because most buyers like to purchase from someone who has kept meticulous maintenance records. There’s no better proof that you’re a good, responsible car owner than if you’ve maintained an accurate log of your car’s use and maintenance.

Do you use your own system for logging your vehicle information? Do you know any other free software that does it as well as this one? Share your insights in the comments section below.

How To Scrub Metadata From Word Documents [Windows]

Posted: 18 May 2010 02:31 PM PDT

scrub metadata wordDid you know that Word documents can hold information that is not visible from within the document?  It is true.  Microsoft tags hidden data to your documents that can give information such as revision logs, identifying information (author, etc.), comments, keywords, hyperlinks, saved dates, edit dates, and much more.  This is called metadata.

Why should we care about the metadata in our Word documents?  Well, there have been news stories about metadata getting people into precarious situations, such as letters supposedly being written by one person but the metadata saying something different. However, even if you are not doing anything wrong, you may want to just be careful with your private information.  There’s nothing wrong with that.

The process you can use to scrub that personal metadata from Word documents is quite simple.  It involves downloading and installing a free program called “Doc Scrubber.”

scrub metadata word

Just download, install and open Doc Scrubber just like you would any other Windows program.  Once you have it open, I think you’ll be surprised at how easy it is to run.

scrub metadata word

As you can see you can also analyze the document’s metadata to see what can be seen.  To do this, just select the “Analyze” button.

Then you will be prompted to browse for the document you want analyzed.

Let’s take a look and see what we can find out about one of my old documents I’ve had lying around.

Well, we know my initials (I hardly ever enter my name for program setups) and apparently I work for Toshiba!  Actually, I never changed that when I bought my laptop a few years back.  You can also see some other interesting things like when the document was created and last saved, edited and printed.

The interesting thing is that I now use Open Office as my Office suite of choice and my documents still end up with some metadata attached.  All the more reason to hit the “Main Menu” button and start some scrubbing.

When you hit the “scrub” button, you are given a few options.

You can save some real time by scrubbing more than one document at a time.  In other words, if you have just learned about this metadata thing, you can catch up and scrub everything you need to in a relatively short amount of time.

Next you’ll be given some more specific options as to what you want scrubbed.

Basically you can choose what information you find sensitive.  You can even reset the revision count and the author/company.  When you hit “next,” the magic begins.

Once the scrubbing is done, run an analysis of the scrubbed document(s) just to see what can still be seen.

As you can see, the document now reads that John Doe who works for Any Company Inc. created the document and the other settings were either reset or cleared, according to what I selected during the scrubbing process.

Like I mentioned earlier, you don’t have to be up to no good (like those showing up in the news) to make use of a tool like Doc Scrubber.  As you can see, the process of scrubbing that sensitive data is a simple one. Check out Karl’s article about scrubbing metadata from photos.

Do you scrub the metadata from your Word documents?  If so, what program(s) do you use?

10 Free Online Game Search Engines To Find Cool Games

Posted: 18 May 2010 12:31 PM PDT

online game search enginesWhen we have search engines for everything under the sun, why not a few for games?  That's what crosses my mind whenever I type a game-related query into Google or another mainstream search engine. I don't have a problem with any of our regular search engines. When I type something like 'free online space shooter games', I get more hits than I can handle.

But a Google search for games never makes me stop wondering – is something better out there?

Online games are in plentiful supply. Think of a site like Kongregate which is just one of many hosting thousands of games. You could play on this lone site till the cows come home and still have more games to play for the rest of the year.

Go to our own Games & Gaming Tips directory and we can carry you on to your old age. But ask a gaming addict and he will say that even more is not enough.

So, here we are with ten online game search engines to discover more games to fill and fuel the gaming addiction. You can continue playing on your favorite online gaming site. Keep this list bookmarked somewhere for the day when you get the urge to enter into new gaming zones. These online game search engine sites are not only about free games, but also about game related information.

Gameseekr

online game search engines

Gameseekr is a search engine for free online, desktop, console, and mobile based games. It is also a social game discovery website that lets you make friends and keep playlists of your favorite games. You can explore the games via its online game search engine which also has an advanced search option, or drill down to the categories. The site also has a category for Free Games.

Google4Games

online game search engines

If you miss Google, here it is. The simple interface does a Google custom search for free online games. You can also check what Twitter and Digg are saying about the gaming world from the links at the top.

ArcadeJump

This is another plain and simple online game search engine that falls back on Google Custom Search. You can add it to your search toolbar with a click.

Easy Game Search

A plain and fast game search engine that does one thing simply – it searches for free online Flash games. Clicking on any of the game links opens up the games directly.

FunLus

Try out the online Flash games search engine at FunLus.com. The game search site tries to find the best online games from many different game sites. It links to the game sources in a frame or you can opt to open up the game in its own window. The site is without any frills but with a fast search.

MUDSeek

MUDs are multi-player online games where game play is in an online virtual world. MUDs (Multi-User Dungeon/Multi-User Dimension/Multi-User Domain) are usually free text based games, though graphical ones have come along. MUDSeek is a Google Custom Search Engine for MUD games that are played around the world.

Another great resource for searching out MUD games is MUDconnect.

GamePublic

GamePublic’s job is to provide users with the most current information about games on all platforms. Information is categorized as reviews, video previews, cheats, downloads (patches and demos), and screenshots. You can do a search across all platforms or do a selective one for specific platforms.

You can further sort the results by ratings, release data, or number of sources.

Free Oldies

If you are nostalgic of the games played when floppies were the in thing, head for the search engine at Free Oldies. The site gives you abandoned games which you can download from the source sites. The source links point to the homepage instead of the actual page for the games. So, you have to do another search at the source site.

GameCurry

This site was launched and then it went back to the drawing boards. It will be re-launched soon. We have covered it before. GameCurry is a search engine that indexes online Flash games and makes it easier to search them out. Keep this site in mind as it is served by the high traffic gaming site Game2Win.

Cheat Server

This site is not about playing games but about cheating in them. It is like a meta-search engine that finds you cheat codes for games for all platforms. You can search or browse them by console or game. We have covered it before at CheatServer: Game Cheat Codes Search Engine.

Using online game search engines helps to find out what other gaming sites host games that you love playing. In the vast ocean of the web, there are many little gems that escape our eye. When we find that gem it just adds a little more to our addiction. But is it a bad addiction to have?

Do you know of any other search engines for games that will broaden the list? Let us know.

µTorrent Griffin Alpha Adds Extension Support [Windows]

Posted: 18 May 2010 11:31 AM PDT

utorrent extensionsExtendability is the new black. Seriously, everywhere you look, applications and games alike are all adding support for upgrades, add-ons, plug-ins and extensions. Whatever you want it, I like it.

The industry is slowly coming to terms with the fact that one size doesn’t fit all, and allowing the consumer to pimp their individual user experiences.

Why shouldn’t it? With decent implementation, the base applications in question remain as fast, functional and easy to use as ever before. There’s no must in the equation. Only opportunity.

uTorrent :: Project Griffin (Alpha)

With its latest alpha release, uTorrent has added support for so called third-party ‘apps’, comparable to Firefox’s add-ons, or Chrome’s extensions.

First of all, the Alpha release of Project Griffin is only available for Windows. Secondly, it’s in Alpha, which means it’s considerably more unstable than even a Beta. This means that you can still expect some rough edges and application crashes before it rolls as smooth as a release version. The Alpha can already be downloaded for those bleeding-edge feature-junkies amongst you.

utorrent extensions

The uTorrent extensions use a web-based framework, which consists only of HTML and Javascript. Essentially, aside from the technical details, this means that uTorrent won’t be paying for the upcoming extensions in size or speed. It will remain the feather-light and lightning-fast BitTorrent client we have all come to enjoy.

The developer API is still to be released, so right now, there are four uTorrent extensions available – discussed below. It goes without saying that these are for demonstration and testing purposes, albeit adding interesting features to the application.

Virus Guard

This might seem like an odd choice, since most people have a virus scanner on their computer already. Sadly, though, the need to surveil an entire computer clogs up a considerable amount of memory. Whether you only want to put a guard at the weakest gate, or add an extra layer of security, Virus Guard comes to the rescue.

utorrent extensions

The extension is powered by BitDefender, a considerable player in the anti-virus community, and can be used one of two ways. Scan All, depicted above, will take a thorough look through your entire torrent libraries, and attempt to spot any irregularities. Additionally, you can right-click any individual torrent and let the Virus Guard inspect it.

Raptr Free Games

The Raptr uTorrent extension takes another route – that of free games. No, the extension won’t integrate MiniClip or Kongregate in your Torrenting application, luckily, but offers you a repository of the top freeware games, much like those we sometimes discuss at MakeUseOf.

torrent extensions

Simply select one of the games from the list, review the description, file size and rating, and start downloading it with the click of a button. Each and every one of those game downloads will fire up a torrent in the main uTorrent panel. Simple as that.

VODO

VODO can be compared to Raptr, but for indie short films instead of games. Again, you can browse the titles as if you were simply using a web-browser, viewing individual film descriptions and comments.

torrent extensions

Those film downloads will be launched as torrents as well, and are sometimes available in both a standard definition, and high definition flavor.

µGadget

µGadget is the only uTorrent extension that specifically focuses on uTorrent, and quite frankly, the only extension I advise against installing. Here’s why.

Although it’s advertised as bringing browser support to uTorrent, it does so much more. And not in a good way. In essence, µGadget is an Ask.com toolbar with a little bit of uTorrent control. As you can see below, the majority of the toolbar is cluttered with the usual unnecessary superfluidity.

torrent extensions

Only when you press the uTorrent icon, limited controls come into sight. If you don’t mind the Ask.com toolbar, µGadget does its job perfectly. However, it’s probably still easier to just open the uTorrent client if you suddenly change your mind about a download.

What do you think? Will uTorrent be needlessly cluttered by these apps, or do you see the windows of opportunity opening wide? Let us know your opinion in the comments section below!

Alfred – A Free Alternative Launcher To Quicksilver & QSB [Mac]

Posted: 18 May 2010 10:31 AM PDT

alternative to quicksilverIf there’s one kind of application that I can’t live without, it would be an application launcher. The comfort of opening applications/files with only a few keystrokes has made it hard for the keyboard guy like me to do it any other way.

So far, my favorite free launchers for Mac are QuickSilver and Google’s Quick Search Box (QSB). While both have their own differences and pluses and minuses, they are siblings which come from the same source.

But now there’s a new alternative to Quicksilver on the field. The name’s Alfred.

The Butler In The Background

Everytime I hear the name Alfred, my mind goes straight to the image of the English butler of Marlinspike Hall that I read in the pages of Tintin. My wild guess is, that might be the same image that the developers of this app have after finding out that the name “Butler” had been taken by another Mac app.

Anyway, if you are willing to give this new assistant a look, you can visit the site and download the app. After a short installation, you’ll have a hat sitting on your menubar. You can access the Preferences from that hat.

alternative to quicksilver

Activating the basic functionality of Alfred requires you to hit a combination of keystrokes. By default it is “Option + Spacebar“, but you can change it to anything you like.

alternative to quicksilver

The first thing that will greet you upon installation is the Preferences window. This is basically the place where the developer asks the users to help the development process of this app by reporting bugs and requesting new features.

quicksilver alternative

But there are more things that you can customize via the Preferences window. Let’s look at some of them.

Defining The Butler’s Tasks

Let’s start with the “General” tab. The “Essential” part lets users customize the key combination to summon Alfred.

quicksilver alternative

The “Result” area deals with other shortcuts that you can use to further utilize Alfred. For example, if you go with the default setting, hitting Control + Return after opening Alfred will open a search window in Finder.

quicksilver alternative

And the “Updates” area is for, well, updates. Users can also access the update checking functionality from the menubar icon.

02c Alfred Preferences - General - Updates.jpg

Similar to the General tab, the “Local” tab also has three areas. They deal with the behavior of Alfred’s local searches. The areas are: Default Search, File Search and Search Scope.

03b Alfred Preferences.jpg

The “Web” tab consists of links to websites accessible from Alfred along with their keywords. Users can edit the keywords simply by clicking on them and typing in the new ones.

04a Alfred Preferences.jpg

These sites will be accessible from Alfred by typing in the keywords. This functionality is similar to Quix, but without the need of a browser.

Users can also add more sites to the list by going to the “Custom Sites” area and clicking on the “plus” sign. Write down the URL, text to display, and the keyword. Then click “Add

04b Alfred Preferences.jpg

The “Appearance” tab deals with matters related to Alfred’s look, the way it acts and the number of result items to show.

05 Alfred Preferences.jpg

And last but not the least, the “Experimental” tab. As the name already tells us, the tab consists of experimental items that might be turned into regular items in the future.

06 Alfred Preferences.jpg

More Butler For The Bread

There you go, a quick look inside the Preferences of the new launcher for Mac – an alternative to Quicksilver. We’ll dig deeper into how Alfred works and what it can do in the next discussion.

Until then, feel free to try and play along with Alfred and share your thoughts and opinions about the app using the comments below.

Editor’s note: We’re giving away 10 copies of Hazel for Mac. You might want to check it out.

3 Ways To Recover Serial Numbers In Windows

Posted: 18 May 2010 09:31 AM PDT

recover serial numbersHaving to re-install your Windows operating system is nothing unheard of. Unfortunately, it has to be done at regular intervals. Before you start however, not only make sure all your data is backed up, but also that you have all the serial numbers of programs you would like to reinstall.

Should you find that you have lost the keys for some of your software, chances are you can recover the serial numbers. You could either search the Windows registry, which stores serial numbers, or use a handy tool that will look up all available numbers for you.

Jalapeno Keyfinder

recover serial numbers

Supported software (selected):

  • Microsoft Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista
  • Microsoft Office XP, 2003, 2007
  • Microsoft ActiveSync 4.2
  • Microsoft Money 12.0 and 14.0
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and 2005
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, Basic 2005 Express, Web Developer 2005 Express, C# 2005 Express, Basic 2003
  • Microsoft Works 7.0 and 8.0
  • Acdsee 6 through 9
  • Ahead Nero 7
  • Corel DRAW 12 and 13
  • Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 through 8
  • Norton System Works
  • The Sims

Jalapeno Keyfinder is the perfect tool to recover Microsoft serial numbers or registration keys besides other Windows software. It’s a small utility, super fast, and easy to use. As soon as you launch it, it will find compatible software installed on your PC and decrypt the keys for you.

If you go to the developer’s homepage, you’ll find that the latest version 2.0 is no longer free. Version 1.06, however, is available for free through Major Geeks. A full list of supported software can be seen here.

ProduKey

recover serial numbers

Supported software:

  • Microsoft Windows Vista and 7
  • Microsoft Office 2003, 2007
  • Microsoft Exchange Server
  • Microsoft SQL

When you unzip and run this tool your antivirus program may display an alert. This is a false positive alarm. You can read more about it here.

Obviously, I removed my Product ID and Key information from the above screenshot.

To view the product key information of software installed on another computer or within another operating system, you can use several command line options as outlined on ProduKey’s download page. /remoteall for example will enumerate all computers on your local network.

For more options that may help you recover your serial numbers, have a look at Karl’s posts User LicenseCrawler To Recover Your Lost Software Serial Numbers and Recover Your Lost XP, Vista & Office Serial Numbers. Simon wrote an article on How To Recover Your Lost Video Game Keys (Windows).

Windows Registry

If the tools above fail to retrieve your product key, you may still be able to find it in your registry. Go to > Start > Run, type > regedit and click > OK. Click > [Ctrl] + [F] to launch the search window. Then search the registry for the software in question. Keep hitting > F3 for the next matching entry, until the serial numbers shows up in the data column.

It may be difficult to spot the correct value. Additionally, many programs decrypt the keys stored in the registry, for example Windows itself. In that case it will be impossible to retrieve the numbers.

In case you’re desperately seeking to recover a serial number that you lost and can’t retrieve with the tools above because you can no longer access that computer, try Find Serial Number. To be used in emergencies only!

Did you have luck finding your keys?

Use Norton Power Eraser To Aggressively Scan & Clean Scareware

Posted: 18 May 2010 08:31 AM PDT

scareware removal I see many different types of infections on a daily basis. Sometimes the infection is so new that your antivirus application does not detect it. The majority of these types of infections are called scareware.

They infect your machine by any number of methods that exploit weaknesses or vulnerabilities in your system. Then they tell you that your machine is infected and you have to pay for their tool to remove it. I have seen one infection that told the user that all of their files were now encrypted and they had to pay to unencrypt them. Meanwhile it was just a bunch of smoke and mirrors.

Symantec has developed a unique tool that scans for these types of infections and performs the scareware removal for you. The tool is called Norton Power Eraser.

Norton describes their application as follows:

The Norton Power Eraser takes on difficult to detect crimeware known as “scareware” or “rogueware” that cybercriminals use to trick you into unknowingly downloading threats onto your PC. This growing form of crimeware uses bogus pop-up alerts or security messages that scare you into thinking your PC has been infected and needs to be fixed immediately.

The tool is meant as a last resort after all other methods have failed. This is simply due to the fact that it does get a lot of false positives. It is very aggressive and can potentially destroy applications. But if you are already on the verge of formatting the machine this is a great last resort.

After downloading and running the 5.28MB installer file you will see a screen that looks like this. It offers you the option of scaning for risks, or review and undo past repairs in case it damaged something.

By clicking on the orange scan button you will see two options. You can either scan an entire system or a directory by choosing its respective options.

scareware

I chose the option to scan a directory.

When I have a severely infected machine I pull the drive out of the computer and connect it to another machine to scan, via a IDE to USB cable. This way I am not booting into the infected operating system and I can scan the entire C:\ drive unobstructed. Then I would select the drive from the browser and click OK.

I chose the D:\ drive and saw a scanning your computer message across my screen as it scanned.

When it is complete it will display what it found:

And in the event it does find 'Risks' as it calls them, they will be displayed like so:

You can then click on the checkboxes next to each risk and hit the fix button to fix your issues. You have the option of creating a system restore point before making the changes.

This is helpful for running the scan on infected machines when the operating system files or registry have been corrupted. Sometimes fixing these issues cause more problems and it is always nice to be able to revert back and try again than to be simply screwed. Remember he who laughs last usually has a backup.
