How To Get Your Own iPhone Wallpapers and Themes Posted: 03 May 2010 04:31 PM PDT iPhones, iTouches, and iPads have four “areas” that can be customized: wallpaper/background, icons, status bar, and dock. While this article discusses just the iPhone, the principles can be applied to the other devices as well. Creating a new iPhone wallpapers and themes is really pretty easy if you have the right tools. For the new user, though, creating a new layout from scratch might be more trouble than it is worth.
Before we get started, though, we all have to read and accept the fine print. If you want to install your own theme or a custom designed theme from a third party, you will have to jailbreak your phone. Jailbreaking is not the same as unlocking the phone, and jailbreaking has its risks. If you are not tech savvy or if you aren’t willing to fork out the cash for a new phone, jailbreaking might not be your best choice. Apple won’t help you if you get stuck because they do not support phones that have been “jailbroken.” Can My iPhone Be Jailbroken? Before we carry on toward creating our vision of loveliness on a digital device, let’s explore what can and can’t be jailbroken. iClarified has an awesome and easy to use jailbreaking wizard and diagram to guide you. If your iPhone can be jailbroken, it’s time to break out the hammer! How Do I Jailbreak my Phone?Jackson Chung has written the world’s best tutorial on how to jailbreak your phone. Everything you need to know is covered here, and once you have your phone ready, come on back over here to learn about the best places to get layouts! What on Earth is a Winterboard? If you are new to jailbreaking, you might wonder what the terms Winterboard and Summerboard mean. Well, it is quite simple. Apple calls the home screen of an iPhone a “Springboard” because you start there and spring off into the planet of the apps. The Summerboard was the first generation theming application for jailbroken devices and that has now upgraded to the Winterboard. The folks over at Hack That Phone have awesome tutorials that help you customize each and every pixel of your iPhone. The Winterboard is the genius of Cydia and you need to use their materials to customize your phone (but you knew that because you read Jackson’s article!). Cydia explains everything you need to know about theming your iPhone, as well. You can find a fantastic selection of free iPhone Winterboard themes at iPhoneThemes. Again, you get them through Cydia, so you will want to be uber savvy about using Cydia. Do-It-Yourself Theme BuildingStep 1: Create Or Select A Wallpaper ImageIf you want to create your own look, you can simply use Photoshop or Gimp to create a wallpaper image. Your final image should be saved as a PNG and should be 320px by 480px. You can use any image. If you want one that has already been created, Theme My Phone has a nice selection of wallpapers, as does AllPhoneWallpapers. You can also check out our articles on uber sweet wallpapers here and here. Step 2: Create Or Select IconsIf you have images that you would like to use (faces of your kids, flowers, whatever), simply use Photoshop or Gimp to create PNG images that are 57px by 57px. Truly, anything can be made into an icon so long as it stays small. If you are looking for sweet icons already created for the iPhone, SpeckyBoy has quite a few awesome choices. If you are looking for simple and clean icons, Glyphish and PixelPress have nice ones to download for free, too. Step 3: Create A Status BarWhile there is only one place that offers status bars for download (iPhone Theme Generator), you can make your own very easily in Photoshop or Gimp. Your design should be simple (because the icons on the phone are teeny tiny), so it is best to stick to one or two colors. Save your image as a PNG that is 320px by 20px. Step 4: Create A Dock BariPhone Theme Generator is the only place that offers downloadable Dock bars, but you can make your own very easily in Photoshop or Gimp. Like the status bar, the design should be simple, so it is best to stick to one or two colors. Save your image as a PNG that is 320px by 91px. Handy Checklist For The Do-It-Yourself CreatorOnce you have these materials assembled, place them into one folder and follow the directions for using SummerCore (or WinterCore) as listed in the jailbreak articles.
Resources For Layout-In-A-BoxIf you don’t want to build from scratch, you can use a dynamite site like the amazing iPhone Theme Generator. Once you’re done, you’ll need an FTP client to transfer the files over to your iPhone. Again, you can refer to Hack that Phone for specific instructions on how to get that done. How many of you have created your own iPhone wallpapers and themes? Please share your tips in the comments section below! Do you like MakeUseOf articles? Do share our articles with others! It’s really important to us. Similar MakeUseOf Articles
The Top 5 Free Tools To Split Or Merge Video Files Posted: 03 May 2010 02:31 PM PDT Speeds have leapfrogged, but split video files haven't disappeared. Split and merge tools remain because files are still being uploaded and downloaded in chunks. Think of the many files you might be downloading (or uploading) from and to file sharing sites. Video files split and compressed in Zip or RAR format is common enough. But offline, splitting a file comes in handy when you want to clip a section from a large file, or you want to merge disparate video files into a combined file.
If I have to recommend one tool for the job, then it has to be the free and wonderful VirtualDub. Read all about the capabilities of this media editor if you decide to Merge Multiple Video Files With VirtualDub. VirtualDub is not the last software standing. The choices of free video splitters/merge software are somewhat limited, but we still have them. Check out the five below : Format FactoryFormat Factory is a full featured video and audio converter with a subset of tools that handle file splitting and merging. Splitting a section from the video is as easy as selecting your video file, setting the clip range with a start time and end time and starting the process. The merge process is also a simple select and merge process. Format Factory being a media converter offers a range of conversion options if you want to change the format and size of the output file. Advanced features include a watermark option that lets you add a graphic in a defined position. The formats supported by Format Factory include – AVI, MPEG, MP4, MKV, WMV, FLV, SWF, and 3GP. Format Factory ver.2.3 is a 37.7 MB download and is supported on Windows (all versions). Movica (Beta)Movica is an Open Source project. The movie editing software is basically a graphical user interface for three other tools (AsfBin, MpgTx, and flvtool) that handle the video editing at the backend. They are installed as part of the software. Here's what you can do with this software:
Movica needs you to have .Net Framework and Windows Media Player (for video playback) to be installed on your system. The software is designed around the need to edit MPG, WMV, FLV, and RM video files. Although it is a full fledged GUI tool, the developer's site gives emphasis to the use of keyboard shortcuts as some features are better handled. The shortcuts are similar to those in VirtualDub and Media Player Classic. Movica allows you to split files according to duration’s set, number of pieces, or by size of individual pieces. File join is much simpler, where you select the video files you want to join, change their order if needed and click on the join button. The operations are fairly quick depending on the size of the files. Movica has a handy feature called Moviclips that lets you save selected portions from a video for editing. The other thing to like about this software is that it comes with an easy to understand help guide. Movica 6.6 (Beta) is a 1.4MB free download. MediaJoinAs the name suggests, MediaJoin is a video/audio joiner. This freeware and user friendly joiner supports WMA, WAV, OGG, AVI, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, WMV, and MP3 formats. The operation to merge video files is a few clicks affair – you select the files that are to be joined and arrange them in sequence. Choose the media type and the output format from the dropdown. The video and audio settings open up. Here, you can specify the compression codecs for the video and audio (for AVI), bitrates/frame rates (for MPEG), or video profiles (for WMV). It seems that the software is not being developed further as the developers do not list it in their product lineup (the download is from Softpedia). MediaJoin (ver.1.00) is a 4 MB download and is supported on Win XP/NT (No mention of Vista and 7). HJSplitIf you are looking to quickly split a file and send it over the internet without any confusing thoughts of codecs and compressions, HJSplit is the tool. HJ Split splits a file into tinier chunks, which can be joined later using the same program. HJSplit can split files as large as 10GB into 640MB parts that can be fitted into a CD. The best thing about this no-brainer freeware is that it does not require an installation, and its own tiny size (306KB). There are also versions available for different OS like Linux and Mac. So, a file split on a Windows machine can be easily merged together on a Mac. Alternatively, you can easily mail across the small sized executable along with the split parts. HJSplit ver. 2.4 is a 344KB download and is supported on Windows 7, XP, Vista, 200x, NT, 9x, ME, and also on Windows 64 bit. From our archives: Check out GSplit which is a similar splitter – joiner tool. Video ToolboxWe go online with Video Toolbox and its rich set of video tools. But like many online apps, Video Toolbox imposes a size restriction of 300MB for your video files. To use the site's set of video tools, you have to register (it's free). The menu on the left lists all the functions. Files can be uploaded from the hard disk or linked via an URL. Selected files can be dropped into a timeline and merged using the command from a dropdown. The output format and resolution can be specified. Cutting videos into smaller parts comes in two modes – Simple and Advanced. The Simple mode has a time slider to set the start and end time. You can split the video and also convert it into other preset media formats. The Advanced mode follow similar first steps, but gives more options like choice of video codecs, bitrates, frame rates, and resolution. Video Toolbox has a nice set of quick video tutorials which walk you through the entire feature sets. Which is your favored tool for the split and merge job? Is it any of the ones here, or have we missed a mention of any good ones? Let us know. Follow MakeUseOf on Twitter. Includes cool extras. Similar MakeUseOf Articles

How To Use A Self-Hosted WordPress Blog For Project Management Posted: 03 May 2010 12:31 PM PDT There are several reasons to use WordPress. If you’re already hosting your own website, there’s no extra cost, unlike the more popular project management services. Wordpress is easy to use and highly customizable with themes and plugins, allowing you to create your own project management blog to suit your needs.
Choose A ThemeOnce you have WordPress installed, the first thing you need to do is choose a theme. Theoretically any theme will do the trick, but there are a few themes that have been designed specifically with this concept in mind. P2P2 is a free WordPress theme that allows you to post updates from the front page of your blog. Users have the ability to embed images, audio files and videos all from a Twitter-like update box. The theme’s customisations include a custom header and the ability to change the background colour or image. You can also restrict posting access and hide the comment threads by default. P2 can be used as a means of keeping other team members apprised of your latest updates in any given project, by using categories and tags as a means of keeping the posts structured. If you choose to use the P2 theme, and would rather keep your updates private, you will need to install the plugin Members Only, explained in more detail below, in order to toggle your privacy settings. GTD TemplaticGTD Templatic is based on the P2 and it makes it even easier for a team to collaborate privately, sharing files and content, all from the front page of the project management blog. Setting GTD Templatic up is painless. After you have installed and activated the theme, you can choose whether or not to display post titles, make the blog private, enable file attachments and enable email notifications. Users can post updates from the front page, attach files to each post, and tag their posts in order to maintain an organized structure. However, if you would like to embed any media in your post, this will have to be done from the back-end of the blog. One of GTD Templatic’s best features is the ability to selectively notify other members when you have posted an update. GTD Templatic, like P2, is very reminiscent of Twitter, using a simple and minimalist approach for project management. ProloguePrologue is the simplest option of all, where updating from the front page is limited to text updates only. Of course, adding updates from the back-end includes all the standard WordPress options for posting. Unlike P2 and GTD Templatic, where comments appear on the front page, each update has to be opened in order to view the comments. Prologue’s customisation is limited to a custom header, and like P2, in order to limit access, the plugin Members Only must be used. Adding PluginsOnce you’ve chosen your theme, there are a variety of plugins that can be added to your blog to enhance the experience. CollabPressCollabPress is the ideal plugin to use together with any of these themes, as it adds the much needed organization and structure to the back end of the project management blog in order to effectively outline projects, tasks and deadlines. After you have created your project, you can create tasks, assign them to specific users, notify them by email of their task, and give them a deadline. The CollabPress dashboard features a section with all recent activities, a section with your personal tasks, a calendar, and links to each project. CollabPress settings include enabling email notifications and setting the level of access, which makes it the only project management plugin listed here that allows users who do not have admin privileges to access the plugin. WP-ProjectWP-Project is a useful plugin to use if you have several clients. You can create as many projects as you need, assign the project to a client, and add tasks, keeping track of your progress, marking each task as completed once it is done. In order to have access to the WP-Project plugin, users must have admin privileges. WP-Task-ManagerWP-Task-Manager can be used in conjunction with WP-Project if a more elaborate task management system is needed. With WP-Task Manager, users can add tasks, assign them to specific users, and assign deadlines. Other users can also comment on the tasks, and mark them as completed once they are done. Like WP-Project, a user must have admin privileges in order to access the Task Manager at all. WP-PollsIf you would like team members to vote on various issues, you can install the WP-Polls plugin, and have polls featured in the blog’s sidebar. After activating the plugin, create your poll and take note of the poll’s number. Under ‘Appearance,’ select Editor, and choose Sidebar.php and insert the following snippet of code:
This will result in the poll appearing in the sidebar. Members OnlyIn the case of P2 and Prologue, the plugin Members Only will ensure that no one else can view your content. The entire blog will only be accessible to members who are logged in, and you also have the choice of redirecting visitors to a specific page on your website. Post From SiteIf you would rather use a theme of your choice, Post from Site is a plugin that gives you a quick link to creating a post from the front page of your site. The plugin has elaborate settings, toggling the creation of posts, categories and tags, uploading images and enabling comments, amongst others. Once you have installed and activated the plugin, be sure to add the following snippet of code to your theme, where you would like the link to appear:
So for example, if you would like it to appear in your sidebar, once again navigate to the theme file, Sidebar.php, and insert the code in the file. Clicking on the link will result in a window overlaying the blog, enabling users to add a new post. Once you have your site set up, you are ready to start adding users. This can be done easily from the back-end of WordPress, and remember if you plan on using the plugins, you have to give your team members admin privileges. As you add users, their credentials will be emailed to the email address you provide. If you need help getting started with Wordpress, be sure to check out the MakeUseOf PDF Guide on How to Build Your Own WordPress Site. And if you don’t have your own self-hosted website, check out Jeffry’s article on how to get one for free. Have you tried to use WordPress for team collaboration? How To Download & Archive Free Music Videos To Watch Later Posted: 03 May 2010 11:31 AM PDT Even though we are getting online more and more often, there are just certain times when that is not an option, or when you’d like not to have to go to a website to search for those videos. So what do you do when you want to download free music videos you love so you can watch them later? Or what about when you want to create your own archive of the music you love to watch whenever you want? Fortunately there are a few ways to find free music video downloads.
Real PlayerReal Player has been one of the most popular media players in the market for quite some time now. Their most recent versions have an amazing variety of features that make storing, editing and sharing videos incredibly simple. Install Real Player and restart your browser. The first thing you’ll notice is that when you mouse over a video from YouTube, or most other players and websites, you will now see a little pop text that says “Download This Video“. It will not only save the video to your computer for later viewing, but will also allow you to trim your videos and convert video and audio to Blackberry, Android, iPod, iPhone and game systems formats. It also allows you to share it with your friends on Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and Twitter with one click. ZamzarZamzar is a great site that allows you to convert files from most video and audio formats into different formats. But how can it help you save music videos to watch later? Zamzar also has this great feature, which allows you to convert a video from any URL and download it. Simply pick the YouTube video or a video from any other site you like, copy the URL of the page and once on “Step 1″ of Zamzar, select URL (sometimes a pop up ad appears when you click that. Just close that page). Paste the URL, select what format you want to download it as, add your email and Zamzar will convert the files and email it to you within a few minutes. Follow the link and download it to your computer. You have 24 hours to retrieve and download the file. SavevidAnother very helpful site that allows you to convert the free music videos you find online into downloadable files. Savevid will take your URLs and create downloadable files in .flv, mp4 and HD formats almost instantly. MovaviVery similar to Zamzar and Movavi, but it allows you to add as many as 5 URLs at a time. Movavi offers paid and free versions though, and the free version can take as much as several hours for the conversion to complete. But they will email you and let you know when it’s ready. Use Browser Add-OnsFirefox has a large number of video downloaders. One I recommend is Video Downloadhelper. It works with a large number of sites and can also be used to download audio and images. It creates a little icon on your browser bar that starts moving when you visit a site. All you have to do then is click on it and select what format you’d like to download. Android Mobile DownloadWant to download music videos to save on your Android phone? Download a great browser app called “Dolphin“. It allows you to save YouTube videos on your phone to view offline. So saving and archiving your music videos can be quite a pleasurable experience. What tools do you use for your collection? What is your experience with the tools above? Write a comment below and let us know. Hey Facebookers, make sure to check out MakeUseOf fan page on Facebook. Over 17,000 fans already! Similar MakeUseOf Articles
5 Chrome Extensions For Faster Navigation Posted: 03 May 2010 10:31 AM PDT A good thing about browsers as opposed to other desktop software is the fact that they are extensible. Firefox and Chrome are excellent examples of the same. Many Google chrome add-ons and extensions are available for customizing almost every aspect of browsing. The one aspect we are going to look into here is quick navigation.
Keyboard NavigationKeyboard navigation allows you to click on the links without using your mouse. The concept is not new, however keyboard navigation does a good job of implementing the idea. The extension defines a hot key (,) which places a hint next to every link on the page that can be clicked. While the hint is displayed, key in the characters next to a link to highlight it. You can then do one of the following:
The extension is intelligent enough to know when you are entering text and need to use the (,) key in the literal sense. VimiumIf you are adept with Vim or a Vim fan, this extension alone easily overshadows the others. While it doesn’t support all of the Vim key bindings (how can it possibly?), it does support the most common ones that can be directly applied to a browser. You can use the ‘h’, ‘j’, ‘k’, ‘l’ keys for scrolling. A ‘gg’ to scroll to top, a ‘G’ to scroll to bottom. ‘/’ to enter search mode and the familiar ‘n’ and ‘N’ to find next and previous. In addition to many such obvious bindings, vimium also adds some of its own, like the ‘H’ goes back in history and ‘L’ takes you one step forward in history. ‘J’ and ‘K’ can be used to go one tab to the left and one to the right respectively and many more. You can actually type ‘?’ to get an overview of all the shortcuts. In addition to all that Vimium also offers the functionality offered by Keyboard Navigation extension mentioned above. Just hit the ‘f’ or the ‘F’ key and it displays a hint next to each clickable link or input control on the page. Key in the hint and you are taken to that link or control. You can also remap these shortcuts using Vimium preferences. Yet Another Drag & GoMoving a little towards the mouse now, Yet Another Drag and Go lets you do a variety of operations by a simple drag operation. You can open new links in foreground or in background, open links before or after the current tab, convert text links to URLs, select text and search in one of the different search engines or add your own. All this with just drag and drop. You can add your own search engines via settings and configure the drag and drop zones for each of them according to your liking. Smooth GesturesBringing more awesomeness to the mouse is Smooth Gestures. Mouse gestures, if you are not familiar with the concept allow you to draw on the screen with your mouse and perform different actions depending upon the shape you draw. In addition, Smooth gestures also includes Rocker navigation, which allows you to use only mouse buttons to do things like going back and forward in history. Holding down the right mouse button and then clicking the left button would take you back in history, so would holding the right button and drawing a line towards the left. You can customize the gestures by visiting options for Smooth Gestures. Quick TabsDo you have a number of tabs open in your browser simultaneously? If yes, you know how hard can it be to find the exact tab you are looking for, specially with Chrome, where tabs are reduced to just favicons when you have a lot of them open. The solution? Quick Tabs. Just hit Ctrl+M and Quick Tabs presents you with list of all the open tabs sorted in order in which they were recently used. You can use the arrow keys to quickly switch to the tab you want, or better still you can actually type some of the characters of the tab you are looking for and Quick Tabs will search in the title and URL to list only the tabs that match the letters you typed. Quick Tabs also keeps track of recently closed tabs and allow you to search and restore closed tabs as well. There you have it, those are our suggestions. We are sure you have plenty in mind too, so go ahead and sound off in the comments with your suggestions! Similar MakeUseOf Articles
Make Switching Between Languages In Firefox Easier Posted: 03 May 2010 09:31 AM PDT I guess there are thousands of MUO readers who use several languages randomly both for reading and writing (blogging, tweeting, commenting) and thus find the built-in Firefox spell-checking somewhat limited. Luckily, it can be extended and here’s how.
How The Built-In Functionality WorksTo enable multi-language spell checking you need to install a separate dictionary for each language you use. When you have one language active and then start typing anything using another language, Firefox will either ignore errors all in all or consider all words an error (ironically, both happened to me and I am not sure what the actual rule for this behavior is). To make the Firefox browser language change, you need to right-click on any word you type and select another dictionary – which is not really usable: Now let’s try to list some alternatives to this default behavior. Dictionary SwitcherDictionary Switcher is a handy FireFox addon that adds the dictionary switcher to the status bar. This makes it easier:
It also has an option to remember the dictionary for the current site which is quite handy as I usually use Russian for only a handful of websites and English for the most part of the day. So I can just remember the language settings for those few sites and never care about dictionaries again. The tool also claims to have a language auto-detect option but it didn’t work with me (like with other people as well judging from the tool reviews) or I just failed to figure out how it should work. Quick Locale SwitcherQuick Locale Switcher is a more advanced way to switch to another language. It allows you to “quickly” switch to a different language (User Interface, Spell Checker Dictionary and Website content) in your browser. The most notable features of the addon include:
The tool also supports a shortcut: it quickly switches back to the previously selected locale if you press CTRL + SHIFT + Q. The options allow to customize all the above mentioned behavior (for example disable the website translation, hide the status bar icon, etc): To remove all languages you don’t need (there are quite a few by default and you may want to avoid that clutter) you should go straight to the “Locales” tab in the Options and select only those you need (there are about 200 languages available): All in all, the tool looks very useful but it just seemed too much to me, so I went with the one I mentioned first. Do you need multiple languages when surfing? Which tools do you use to make international browsing easier? Do you like MakeUseOf articles? Do share our articles with others!
