iPad Review: Roundup of Available iPad Reviews

Posted: 04 Apr 2010 03:01 AM PDT

The iPad is available since yesterday morning. Beside our IT&T review there were already reviews published by other blogs. Here's a roundup of the review verdicts, with links to the originals:

PC Magazine

"Is the iPad a perfect product? No. And the omissions will give the anti-Apple crowd plenty of ammo. Why do I need this extra device that's not a full-fledged laptop? Where's the camera? What about Flash? Um, how about multitasking? These are all valid complaints, but one thing I can say about most Apple products, and certainly the iPad: There may be things it doesn't do, but what it does do, it does remarkably well. Aside from the aforementioned limitations, there isn't a lot else to gripe about.
And to my great surprise, you can actually get real work done with the iPad. There aren't a lot of directly comparable products in this nascent category. We haven't had enough quality time with the competing Fusion Garage JooJoo, but it will be a huge coup if it can match the utility and grace of Apple's first tablet. I'm curious to see who actually buys the iPad, apart from Apple enthusiasts. But I can tell you that when my laptop eventually dies, I'll be getting one."

BoingBoing

"Maybe the most exciting thing about iPad is the apps that aren't here yet. The book-film-game hybrid someone will bust out in a year, redefining the experience of each, and suggesting some new nouns and verbs in the process. Or an augmented reality lens from NASA that lets you hold the thing up to the sky and pinpoint where the ISS is, next to what constellation, read the names and see the faces of the crew members, check how those fuel cells are holding up.
I like it a lot. But it's the things I never knew it made possible — to be revealed or not in the coming months — that will determine whether I love it."

New York Times

"The iPad is so fast and light, the multitouch screen so bright and responsive, the software so easy to navigate, that it really does qualify as a new category of gadget. Some have suggested that it might make a good goof-proof computer for technophobes, the aged and the young; they're absolutely right.
And the techies are right about another thing: the iPad is not a laptop. It's not nearly as good for creating stuff. On the other hand, it's infinitely more convenient for consuming it — books, music, video, photos, Web, e-mail and so on. For most people, manipulating these digital materials directly by touching them is a completely new experience — and a deeply satisfying one. The bottom line is that the iPad has been designed and built by a bunch of perfectionists. If you like the concept, you'll love the machine. The only question is: Do you like the concept?"

Wall Street Journal

"I did run into some other annoying limitations. For instance, the email program lacks the ability to create local folders or rules for auto-sorting messages, and it doesn't allow group addressing. The browser lacks tabs. And the Wi-Fi-only version lacks GPS. Also, videophiles may dislike the fact that the iPad's screen lacks wide-screen dimensions, so you either get black bars above or below wide-screen videos, or, if you choose an option to fill the screen, some of the picture may get cut off.
All in all, however, the iPad is an advance in making more-sophisticated computing possible via a simple touch interface on a slender, light device. Only time will tell if it's a real challenger to the laptop and netbook."

USA Today

"Apple has pretty much nailed it with this first iPad, though there's certainly room for improvement. Nearly three years after making a splash with the iPhone, Apple has delivered another impressive product that largely lives up to the hype."
Finally, if that all looks like a lot of reading for a product that still has no on-sale date for the UK, PC Magazine has also posted a video review that gives an excellent overview of the iPad in five minutes — well worth a watch.

iPad Review: First Review And Is the iPad Usable?

Posted: 03 Apr 2010 11:58 PM PDT

by iPhone-tips-tricks.com April 4, 2010 - Life is good. I have a fresh cup of coffee and in front of me, the iPad, a beautiful sealed box. I was lucky to convince my friend to borrow me his brand new iPad so I could play with it the whole night. Can you imagine that he hasn't opened the box just for me? Yep I haven't slept yet! The good thing is that I can write this review and share it. Please keep reading and at the end you may get to know, like me, if you should or should not buy one too.

The unboxing - Believe it or not, Apple did a great job again! The iPad box is so incredible easy to unbox. The box is little bigger in size than then iPad is and several inches deep box. An iPad photo is printed on the front cover of the box. After opening the the cover, I was thrilled! A giant iPhone! One massive glass windows. With one finger, I lifted the iPad. Oh my what is it lightweight. Really it weights nothing! The finish of the material is nice, just like the iPhone and iPod Touch. After lifting the iPad out of the box, I see clean white surface of the box, except just a fingertip in the middle. It is another cover I can easily open with my fingers. Okay, beneath it are the data cable and the power unit. Just the same one you have seen on your iPhone. Looks like the same connector interfaces are used. [also see post 30 second unboxing video]

The form factor - As I said, the iPad is lightweight. It feels lighter than a mini laptop and gives a mor balanced feel than because it is so thin. I could carry that thing the whole day. It is smaller than a legal pad. Wow my finger automatically presses the "Home" button and there it is - a giant multitouch screen like my iPhone - beautiful colors. And I know already how to operate it. Actually my sons were able to operate my first iPhone in 2007 without any instructions, so the iPad is peanuts for them now. Let's surf the internet start mobile Safari, wow it start fast, faster than my iPhone. Swiping web pages is so easy. I can flip the iPad and the screen follows me to landscape or portrait mode. [see post ifixit photo's for all iPad parts and components]

The onscreen  keyboard - Let's order the Pages App  [App store link $9,99] to test the keyboard.  The first keyboard minutes are not finest. some mishits. But after a while it was getting better, faster and at the end I love it. I think the keyboard needs to learn my mishits (I am far from perfect you know:) Actually it feel comfortable to type in landscape mode.

The performance - I used the words fast several times now. And it is fast for almost all instructions I give. Apple is using a proprietary CPU named 1.00 GHz A4 processor. That seems to paid off well. The iPad boots fast and it runs fast. Intel has invested in mobile CPU technology with the Atom chipset. But I     think the combination of Mac OS X and the A4 CPU is chosen that well, it may have caught or surpassed Intel in mobile CPU technology. I hope these companies will benchmark the real facts soon. One thing is for sure, Apple has it powerful processing technology in the house and with the massive sales forecast of the iPad, it will impact the mobile industry again. Maybe is using one app at the time the key of keeping the CPU fast? That could be the major downside of the iPad. On the other hand, time will tell what users are really missing (or not missing) if you can only run one program at the time.

Office connectivity - The mail app is much easier to use with this big size multitouch screen and big on screen keyboard. It has native Microsoft exchange support. Incredible nice is the Contacts and the Calendar app. The user interface look and feel is 'clean'. No 'feature creeps' like the thousands of bells and whistles in for example Outlook.

Battery life - Apple iPad specifications says 10 hours. I am sitting here the whole night (6 hours) and I still got 60 percent battery life. Not new for iPhone jail breakers and Mac users, but new for regular iPhone users is the battery percentage indication. The question is: how accurate is it. 61 or 69 percent, what is the difference in the use time left? Is a remaining time not even a better indicator?

150.000 Apps - With a little adjustment the current app store apps for the iPhone and iPad can be easily made available for iPad users. The Microsoft Windows netbooks also has this potential with the thousands of windows apps, but they don't have iTunes and App Store and the brand new iBook store. With this in mind, Apple iPad has an enormous advantage compared to any, I repeat any competitor. [click here to visit them App Store,  iTunes, iBook  store ]

At $499 for the iPad Wifi version, it looks like Apple has the potential to completely kill the netbook  market this year or at least take a big bite out of it. Back to the question, should I buy one, the answer is yes! I have to give back my friends iPad but in fact I want to keep it.

iPad News: Unboxing Experience The iPad [video]

Posted: 03 Apr 2010 11:23 AM PDT

A fresh owner of the new iPad filmed the unboxing experience with, I guess, an iPhone. Apple did agin a great job to make the so package easy to open. I am reading Inside Steve's Brains and it is so true about the packaging. It is as described in that book. A human logical designed package that is so so easy to unpack the iPad. Wow I am so excited. The WOZ was 11 hours ago also so enthusiastic twittering "iPad delight...wow this is better than I ever imagined!". I am sold, I got to get one ASAP!
