The Basics of How to Properly Resize Images in Photoshop

Posted: 26 Feb 2010 03:30 PM PST

photoshoplogo.pngAs the megapixel size of cameras get larger (the standard size seems to be 8 megapixels and larger), it means that the photos from your camera will be larger in pixel and document dimension sizes. These larger sizes do matter when it comes to printing, emailing, or posting images on a website. Any version of Photoshop can resize images and prepare them for various output purposes.

Before we get into basic methods about how to resize images, let me remind those of you who are new digital photography that an 8, 12, or 15 megapixel camera does not mean that it will make better photos or that it's a professional camera. The megapixel size of a camera impacts the maximum size of the prints that can be made.

So for example, a 12MP (4000 x 3000 megapixels) camera can print upwards to a 16″ x 20″ image at 240dpi, but that doesn't mean it will be excellent photo quality. Check out Tiporama which includes an Image Size Calculator to convert pixel and resolution sizes into physical image width and height in inches. This digital camera photography chart is also another good resource understanding pixel sizes and corresponding print sizes.

So now let's look at how to resize images in Photoshop. To follow along with this tutorial, you might want to launch an original photo in Photoshop that you have recently made with your camera.

Image Size

First, to get the size information about an image in Photoshop, click on Image>Image Size in the menu bar. The resulting dialog window will tell you all the information you need to know.

resizing15

  1. At the top, you will get Pixel Dimensions and actual file size of the image. The image file used in this tutorial came from a Canon Powershot G9, a 12MP camera. The photo was shot in the highest JPG quality mode. If it had been shot in RAW format, the file resolution size would have been even larger. Notice in the screenshot above, if you increase the resolution size of the image, it will in turn increase the file size. So if you're wondering why your computer or external drive is filling up so fast, it could be attributed to the number and file sizes of the photos or song files you're importing into your memory drive. Photos taken with larger megapixel size cameras will eat up space on your hard drive very fast. That's why you need a large external drive to house image files. And it’s also why you don't want to hang onto image files that you're not going to use or were poorly shot.
  2. In the same box, you also get the actual pixel width and height of the image. So if you know a particular pixel size that you need for say website posting, you can make those changes here. For example, you might need to change the pixel size to 800 x 600 or smaller. If you want the image to fit and display in an email, you will make it even smaller in pixel size.
  3. This dialog box also provides actual physical document size of the image. In this example, we see that the photo is about 22 x 16 inches. Resolution essentially refers to image quality of the photo. Typically, if you're resizing an image to post on a website, the resolution size should be between 72 and150 dpi. If you're printing the image, it should between 240 and 300dpi. For most normal size prints, 240dpi is sufficient. Changing the resolution will not change the physical dimensions of the size. It will only change the pixel quality of the image.
  4. The last important part of this box has to do with constraining the proportions and re-sampling the pixels of a selected image. When you change say the width of the photo, Photoshop will automatically adjust the appropriate image height. If the Constrain Proportions is not checked, the dimensions of your image might become skewed.

Resizing the Image

To resize images in Photoshop, you first want to make a duplicate of the original photo so that you can always re-use its original size if need be. You can do this quickly by selecting Image>Duplicate in the menu bar. If you don't duplicate, you can select File>Save As (not Save) to save a copy of the resized image.

With the Image Size box opened, you can change either the pixel size or document size of the image by simply changing the numbers to the size you need. Be sure to keep the Resample Image and Constrain Proportion boxes checked.

However, notice that if you need a specific dimension size, such as 8″ x 10″, using the original dimensions might not work proportionally for printing. Since most consumer cameras are not full frame, you might lose some portions of your image when it is printed. Sometimes you notice that when you get images printed, a part of the image might get chopped off. In the screenshot above, you’ll notice that if I want to change the document size to 10″ x 8″, Photoshop changes the size to 10″ x 7.5″ in order to keep the width and height proportional. If the image is printed full bleed at 10″ x 7.5″ on 8″ x 10″ paper, one side of the image will have .5 inches of white space on it. That wouldn't look very good.

Crop for Size

So the best way to resize images for printing is to crop it to the size you need. To do this, simply close out of the Image Size box without clicking OK, and then select the Crop tool in Photoshop. Below the menu bar of Photoshop, you will see the width and height fields where you can type in the exact dimensions you want. Be sure to put "inches" or "in" after each number. You can also add the resolution size.

Now just click on the image, hold down the mouse button and drag your cursor to the maximum width and height of the crop you set. After your release the button, you can see what part of the image needs to be cropped in order to get the size you want. You can click on the image again and move the crop to change which side/part of the image you want to crop out. After your crop is set, click the Return key and Photoshop will make the crop.

Resize Images for the Web

You no doubt know that it's nearly impossible to post or email large image files, such as a 32MB or 2400 x 1800 pixel image. It needs to be resized so that it can downloaded off the web page faster or emailed and opened easily by the recipient. In order to do this, you will want to open the Image Size box as described above, and change the resolution to 72 or 150dpi. Also change the pixel dimensions of the image to the size you want, say 800 x 600 pixels.

Next, click File>Save for the Web, and a dialog box will open. There are three basic parts of this box that you will want to be familiar with.

reszing18

  1. At the bottom left, you will see the current pixel size of the image. You will also see the approximate amount of time it might take for the image to download, on say a slow server. Typically you want the pixel size for web posting to be under 120KB so the image will load pretty fast on a web page.
  2. If you need to change the pixel size of the image, you can click on the Image Size panel and change the numbers there. Experiment with changing the numbers and notice how it changes the pixel size and download speed. Also make sure the Constrain Proportions box is checked.
  3. If the image quality is not as good as you want, you can change the resolution quality from low to medium, or to high, under the Preset area of the box. You can also click directly on the Quality field and move the resulting slider left or right to increase and decrease the optimized size of the image. Just keep checking the quality of image itself and the resulting pixel size and speed. (Note: we're focusing on the basics for resizing JPEG images; there are other presets in the box for PNG and GIF images.)

When everything is set, simply click Save, and Photoshop will resize the image based on your settings and save a copy of the image. The original image will not be saved.

There are also online options for resizing photos, but if you're working in Photoshop, these basic methods should save some time. And if you find yourself resizing images for the web or for print, you might consider creating a Photoshop action or two to speed up the process.

Let us know how this tutorial works out for you, and if you have any questions or other suggestions.

3 Useful Firefox Add-ons To Help Save You Money

Posted: 26 Feb 2010 01:30 PM PST

brokeIn times like these, we’re all trying to pinch some pennies and save money where we can. Some people are going out less, some are cancelling their cable TV, and many families are cutting out luxury purchases altogether.

If you’re looking to save some money but you don’t want to completely give up online shopping, I’ve compiled a list of three great Firefox money add-ons that can utilize the power of the internet to provide you with the best possible deals.

Whether you’re using Amazon, eBay, or dozens of other sites – these add-ons will make sure you never spend more than you have to online.

Ookong for Amazon

Ookong helps you make purchases on Amazon at the “right time” by tracking price history and providing notifications when prices drop.  Prices on Amazon fluctuate constantly, so this add-on will let you know the instant a good deal is available.

Ookong is built right into Amazon, so when you’re viewing an item listing you can click the large Follow this item button to begin tracking the price of that item as well as its price history.

firefox money

After you’ve clicked Follow this item, the button will change to View the history which you can click to watch the price over time, including a display of the item’s lowest price thus far. You can add as many items as you want to your watch list.

You can easily access your Following List later by clicking the Tools menu in Firefox then selecting Ookong.  When the price of an item you’re following drops, you will receive a notification in the bottom right of your browser.

If you want to learn more about Ookong (and hear a great accent with classy music), check out Ookong’s introductory video.

InvisibleHand

InvisibleHand is a great add-on for Firefox that notifies you when a better price is available on a product you’re browsing. InvisibleHand works with over 100 retailers in the US and UK.

When a better deal is available on a product you’re browsing, you will receive a notification at the top of your browser window showing the competing retailer. InvisibleHand will also let you know when the product you’re viewing is already listed at its lowest price.

invisiblehand

The InvisibleHand icon (the arrow in the bottom right of Firefox) will glow green when you are browsing a site that the add-on supports.  If you’re browsing a site and you aren’t given a price comparison right away, check if the InvisibleHand icon is blinking.  If it is, the add-on is still in the process of searching for the best deal.

Myibay Auction Sniper for eBay

eBay is a great place to find deals on new and used items, but it seems like somebody always manages to steal the winning bid from you in a tight bidding war. This type of activity is called “sniping”, where a person enters a winning bid at the last possible second of the auction, and you can also partake in this with the myibay Auction Sniper Firefix money add-on.

After you’ve installed Myibay Auction Sniper, you have a few different ways to add an item to your Sniping list.  When viewing an item you want to snipe on eBay, either:

  1. Click the “Snipe It” link which should appear in the bottom right of the listing below the Other item info box.

    myibay button

  2. Open the Tools menu in Firefox and select “Snipe it with mibay.com“.

    myibay menu

  3. Right click the item’s page and select “Snipe it with myibay.com“.

    myibay rightclick

When you add an item to your sniping list, you will be prompted to securely log into your eBay account and then be able to set the price of your bid and how many seconds you want left in the auction before the bid is placed.  After you click Add, you can track and manage your snipes through myibay.com (which is free).

Conclusion

These add-ons will help you shop smarter and purchase products when they are at their absolute lowest prices. You may not save a lot of money on an individual item – but several dollars off each item you buy will save you and your family a lot of money throughout the year.

The Best Sites To Find Cheap Mac Computers For Sale

Posted: 26 Feb 2010 11:30 AM PST

Macs are brilliant computers and are arguably better than PCs. They suit creative professionals such as writers and designers, educational needs and personal computing requirements. Why then, do PCs dominate the market?

It's in the price. Apple don't allow their products to be manufactured by third parties like Microsoft do. That way, they have all of the costs involved in creating the product but also have all of the profit.

There are two ways to overcome the price obstacle to find cheap Mac computers. Either bite the bullet and cough up the price for a computer with the same specs as a PC but a at double the price or use the Internet to save yourself a packet and have a shiny (new) Mac delivered to your door.

North America

Official Apple Store

Whilst the official Apple Store is a good place to buy brand new Macs, you can also save hundreds of dollars by buying refurbished and cheap Mac computers from them as well. I did some research and found some models such as a 3.06GHz 21″ iMac for just $1000. That means you save over $200 on the normal price. Savings on MacBooks are even better, some with up to 30% off the retail price.

cheap Mac computers

Until recently, buying 'refurbished' computers over the Internet was dodgy to say the least. This was mainly because different people had different perceptions of the word 'refurbish'. For some, it was wiping the hard drive and shipping it off. For others, it was replacing all worn and damaged parts, wiping the hard drive, updating all the software and sending you a pristine laptop. Thankfully, the latter has become the norm now and because these are from Apple, you know you’re in good hands.

Power Max

Power Max, an authorised Apple reseller, have become very well known for selling top quality Macs including both new and used conditions. Delivery is free for any item over $100. They also have a customer support line which is comforting.

Their prices are quite good, especially among the used computers. You could land yourself a 17″ Intel for as little as $800. You can also buy components separately if you just need a second monitor or a new keyboard.

cheap Mac computers

I haven't gotten to the best bit yet. You can save even more money, potentially hundreds of dollars, by trading in old Mac products such as laptops, iMacs, iPods and the like. All you have to do is fill in a form to get a quote back from their team.

Your old computer is then either refurbished and resold or recycled. What's more, if you trade in your old PC you don't get charged tax on your next purchase. You can also trade in your old Mac and have funds credited to your account if you don't want to make a purchase immediately.

Another great site where you can find great Mac deals taken from numerous websites is DealMac. They collect deals and saving on Macs and Mac accessories and post them to their site. It is updated numerous times every day.

Europe

Second Chance PC

This site, which is based in the UK offers new, used and refurblished, cheap Mac computers to the European market. Advantages of ordering your new Mac from within the EU (if you live here, that is) is the free trade. This means you won’t be charged import duty as you would if found buying tech goods from the US or any other country. The postage is also considerably cheaper and there will be no need to change things such as power adapters and so on.

cheap Mac computers

They have a good selection of computers available ranging from the very new to the very old. You can pick up a Mac which is a couple of years old for just a few hundred Euros and the new machines have up to 30% discounts when compared to their retail counterparts.

Asia-Pacific

BuyMac.com.au

buy mac au

This website caters to the Australian market and is an authorised Apple Reseller. Their normal prices are pretty much on par with most other websites with a few variations. When they have sales and promotional offers they can go down quite a bit. However, it’s their ‘Clearance’ section that I’m interested in.

They list plenty of ex-demo Macs and retail returns. For example, I saw this 15″ MacBook Pro which had been reduced from AUD$3,199 to AUD$2,499. Not a bad saving.

They also have a real-world store in Melbourne so you can pick up your products should you live near them.

Note: Most of the Official European and Asian Apple websites offer refurbished Macs in the same manner as the US site does so make sure to check out your local Apple website for great savings.

A Word of Warning about Asian Wholesalers

Macs and Apple products in general have become status symbols as much as they have become tech Gods. For that reason, there are numerous websites which will offer you discounted Macs as seemingly unimaginable prices. I'm talking about certain Chinese wholesale sites which I won't mention for legal reasons. I'm sure many of you are familiar with them by hearing or seeing rip-off iPhones and hearing horror stories on online forums.

I have heard both good and bad, but it's important to take good reviews with a shovel of salt as this is the Internet after all. Bottom line, many cheap Mac computer offers are scams. I did a lot of research for this article to ensure I didn't inadvertently include any in this list. Remember, if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is. Sometimes it's worth paying an extra couple hundred bucks so the product will actually arrive at your door.

Apple Education Discount

When buying from the official Apple online stores, you can save hundreds of dollars on new Mac computers if you’re a student or a teacher/lecturer. Apple say:

“If you are a student, teacher, lecturer, administrator or other staff member in education you qualify for special discounted pricing on Apple computers, software and select third party products.”

So if you’re at college or university, it may work out cheaper to buy directly from Apple because of the discount. Keep in mind that you will have to prove you actually attend the school you say you do.

Always remember, you can also save even more money when buying online by using coupon sites such as Retail Me Not and Deals.com. These sites syndicate one-off offers from thousands of website, all of which would be impossible to cover here. I dedicated an an entire chapter to the subject in my PDF Guide which you can find here.

Do you know of any other great websites which offer Macs at a cheaper price? Well, share them!

Headmagnet – Free Online Flash Cards That Stop Memory Decay

Posted: 26 Feb 2010 10:30 AM PST

Memory is the water that's in the bucket of our brain. It doesn't matter if the bucket is half full or it's up to the brim, some of the water evaporates. So does memory because our brain can take only so much.

When it comes to memory, the 'R' for “recollection” is always aided by another 'R', and that's “revision” (or repetition). It is not only an important study skill, but a skill of life as well that calls for us to harp on the same strings to maintain the health of our mind.

With technology has come some great study tools. Simon's post on 3 Great Online Tools to Improve Study Skills & Get Better Grades, gives an idea of the promise when computers and the web come to assist learning.

Flash cards, mind maps and cheat sheets are very much real-world tools. It's just that their virtual avatars have extended the possibilities of use and reuse.

Take flash cards for example. Flash cards are simple set of cards which have a question on one side and the answer on the reverse. Read the question, try to recall the answer and flip the card over to check. It's a simple and cheap but a very effective memory aid.

Headmagnet is another in the queue of free online flash card applications. But it hopes to jump to the head of the line with its unique selling proposition…it predicts when you are most likely to forget. By the way, the word 'Selling' is just to honor the acronym…the online web app is completely free.

Headmagnet's About page mentions that its backend tech is based on the ACT-R cognitive architecture developed at Carnegie Mellon University.

For me and you, it simply means that Headmagnet analyses our flash card reading scores and gauges the rate of our forgetfulness. Using that data, Headmagnet helps us study more effectively by predicting and proposing when to review the study material.

So here's me logging into Headmagnet to take them up on their word.

free online flash cards

Headmagnet welcomes me with a few sample lists setup. That's just to get me acquainted with how the system works. Notice the In Head section on the right. That's the scoreboard to keep our eyes on. The main action areas are mentioned in a series on the top – My Lists, My Head, Friends, Profile, and Settings.

My Lists

free online flash cards

These are groupings of items I am in the process of studying. A few default list types (templates) are already included like one for vocabulary or the one for names and faces. Adjoining the lists are the ways one can use to go through them.

For instance, for my vocabulary refresher, I can take a word and recall its definition or vice versa. I can also tweak the study modes to suit my learning style.

I guess I will click the bright orange button and create my own list. Below is a little sample list of words I am trying to learn. As I add each new word to the list, it gets added to the Items on the right. Using the dropdown, I can view the Items either by way of questions or its answers.

free online flash cards

But for a word buff like me the best feature is the Add New Field. For instance, I added an Image field that will complement my learning of new words by bringing up associated word images (I took the images from my HDD and the web).

After making a choice of the privacy settings (kept it open for Friends), I start my vocabulary training by clicking on Study Now. Clicking on Add to My Head, next to it will put it among the favorite lists which I want to study over a long term.

The screen goes grey for a moment and this is what I see –

online flash cards

I can also create my own study modes with a slew of customization options.

online flash cards

Then a few personalization settings for the study session…

online flash cards

Then the questions for which I have to think up the answers and accordingly self check myself with the response. A timer on top ticks away for the duration of the test.

flash cards online

The test cycles back to the incorrect response and quits only when I have them all right.

My Head

This is the section where, Headmagnet helps us to predict when we will forget the learnt items. My Head displays all lists which you want to learn over a period of time and also displays the current level of strength for each list through a colored bar.

flash cards online

As memory levels start to decay, the color goes from green to orange and then red. The system also prompts us to review the items. Right now, for my lists I don't have anything to review.

With a large number of lists, it's better to prioritize by clicking on the stars.

Sharing Lists

I shared my first list with my friends and build up a community of shared lists. The other two options are Private and Public. The other way to take Headmagnet to a wider audience is by linking it to Facebook.

Flashing Our Memory

From log-in to the first list, takes about 5 minutes. It's easier to operate if you watch the basic video on the homepage and then do the tour to understand all the features.

Free online flash cards are simple devices by themselves. Headmagnet makes the learning simpler by giving a variety of ways to structure the Item lists and the lessons. From straight Q&A to multiple choice tests and slide shows…one can be one's own tutor.

The scaled grading system and the predictive review helps us to keep tabs on how we are doing with the lessons.

As free online flash card applications go, Headmagnet is one of the more flexible ones around. Take a few lessons and let us know your score for it.

Sublight – Finally A Hassle-Free Subtitle Retrieval and Playback Solution

Posted: 26 Feb 2010 09:30 AM PST

We’ve been cutting into the subtitle topic again lately. Last week, we wrote about The 3 Best Subtitle Sites, in sequel to our How To Add Subtitles To A Movie or TV Series article. I don’t care much to admit it, but I still need my English subtitles to keep up with some movies.

What doesn’t occur to most people, is how tedious the process of finding subtitles to download still is. It’s one of the few things we do almost completely by hand.

But not anymore. In the comments section of our article on subtitle sources, MakeUseOf reader Rahul pointed us to Sublight, an amazing Windows desktop application that handles all your subtitle download needs for you.

Sublight

Sublight really is an amazing application. Developed by Sublight Labs, this tool can help you to search, download, and watch your videos with subtitles on the fly. Truly, it’s the only thing you’ll ever need, and once you start using it, you’ll wonder why we’ve been doing these things manually for so long.

subtitles download

Being this versatile, we won’t be able to cover all Sublight’s features, but we’ll provide you with a sneak peek, and introduce you to the most prominent features of the application.

Installation

You’ll get a chance to specify some of the more important options in the installation dialog. Most important, perhaps, the language. The results can still be filtered while searching, so you don’t necessarily need to make a selection, but it’ll spare you a lot of trouble in the near future.

subtitles download

After specifying your default video player, you’ll also be shown a few default subtitle source plugins. Although it doesn’t hurt having multiple sources, it should be noted that DivxFinland and subdivx are respectively Finnish or Spanish language sources, and that Podnapisi.NET requires registration.

subtitles download

Finally, you’ll be asked for Windows Explorer Integration. If you enable this feature, you’ll be able to (automatically) download subtitles from the file explorer. I would advise to leave out FLV (flash video), unless you regularly download movies from YouTube, DailyMotion, or other streaming sources.

english subtitles

Please note that the Windows Explorer integration does not always work with Windows 7. This will hopefully be resolved in future releases.

Finding Subtitles

To business. Using Sublight to find subtitles is remarkable easy. We’ll discuss the manual and semi-manual searches first. To supply a whole directory with subtitles, check below.

As you can see, you’ve basically got two options; auto search, which takes its info from a video, and manual search. After specifying a video file, Sublight will try to deduct relevant information, like the title, year, season and episode, and fill in the manual search forms. It wisely ignores the release information (often being polluted with forum URLs, or otherwise irrelevant data).

Although all this can be done manually, and without much work, it’s advised not to. Using the auto search will also link video and subtitle files, sparing you another bit of work.

english subtitles

Sometimes, especially with popular releases, you’ll be flooded with unwanted results. If so, you can always further narrow down results by using the filter feature. This will allow you to filter (or revise) the language, rating, publisher and the number of discs.

english subtitles

Once you’ve got your subtitles, you can use the application bar, or right-click to download and deploy your subtitles. If you used the auto-search feature, you can already start to play your video. Other options include rating and verification, preview, properties, or searching for related subtitles.

download subtitles

If you’ve got a lot of video files, providing them all with valid subtitle files can still prove a tedious job. Alternatively, you can scan and index your video folders, and do a batch subtitle download. Eliminating this can occasionally lead to inaccurate subtitles, but overall it’ll save you a whole lot of time.

download subtitles

Aside from these features, you can also use Sublight to correct subtitle timing, or even to publish your own subtitles.

Do you know any alternative software solutions to Sublight? Be sure to let us know in the comments section below!

Sharing photos and videos on multiple social networks using iTookThisOnMyPhone is seamless – once you have it set up.

To use ITookThisOnMyPhone, you will have to sign up for an account, which you can easily do once you have installed the app from the Blackberry App World, or if you’d prefer you can do so on their website here.

When you first install the program, you can set up which websites you would like to share your media on simultaneously – with Facebook, YouTube and Photobucket available for photos and videos, and Flickr, Picasa, Shutterfly, TinyPic, TwitPic, TwitrPix and Webshots for photos only.

The app adds an option in your menu to upload videos or photos. Uploading videos or photos is done directly from the photo/video folder. Bringing up the menu when you have a photo or video open, you will find a new option to ‘Send to ITookThisOnMyPhone.’ You can then add a title for the image, choose which album to upload it to, with the capability to create new albums, whether public or private, directly from your phone.

iTookThisWithMyPhone is particularly useful for users who are active on several photo or video sharing websites.

UberTwitter

One of the most popular and feature rich Blackberry Twitter apps is unarguably UberTwitter.

In the tab at the top of your screen, or your ‘Uber Bar,’ you can access your timeline, replies and direct messages, while hitting the menu button opens up a wealth of options.

From the menu button, you can start a new tweet, refresh your timeline, check your replies and direct messages, access a list of your friends and followers, your profile, your favourites, and your timeline, amongst others.

UberTwitter supports multiple accounts, and supports Twitter’s built-in retweet feature, as well as lists, and the ability to read conversations.

UberTwitter’s popularity is not only due to its vast number of options, but also because it is highly customizable. If you’re not a fan of Twitter’s new retweet feature – you can choose which method you’d prefer to use, or if you’d prefer to receive a prompt when retweeting. The appearance is also customizable, with the ability to change the font type and size, and the size of pictures in your timeline, as well as to add specific user’s timelines to your Uber Bar. Adding a user to your Uber Bar can be done through the main menu.

Replies and direct messages are distinguishable in your timeline – with replies highlighted in yellow and messages in green.

From UberTwitter, you have the ability to do pretty much anything you can from your computer – add tweets to your favourites, follow and unfollow tweeters, add users to your lists and even report spam.

Unlike other Blackberry Twitter apps, you can add or take photos while using Uber Twitter, or add videos to your tweets. Photos are uploaded either to TweetPhoto or to MyPic.me, and can be done directly from your photo folder. Other services that are supported by UberTwitter include TwitLonger, for when 140 characters simply aren’t enough, as a well integrated bit.ly support for url shortening.

The only con to using UberTwitter is that occasionally, sponsored content appears in your timeline, such as tweets from the New York Times, a small price to pay for such a feature-rich free app.

LittleChirp

If you need a quick way to update your Twitter status without waiting for your timeline to update, or are looking for a way to save on your data plan and still get a message out on Twitter, LittleChirp is a convenient little app with no extra bells and whistles.

Launching the free Blackberry app instantly takes you to a small window asking you “What are you doing?” Type up your tweet, hit enter, and the first time you will be prompted to enter your Twitter credentials. LittleChirp is a great app for updating Twitter on the go.

Snaptu

Snaptu is a handy app if you use several social networks including Twitter, Facebook, Picasa and Flickr.

Using Snaptu, you can update your Twitter status, read your replies and messages, as well as read tweets in your timeline. Snaptu is quite impressive as a Twitter client as far as consuming information is concerned, with the ability to go to users’ profiles, open URLs in the Blackberry browser, and easily navigate from one user to another.

Snaptu also makes it conveniently easy to search hashtags that appear in tweets, add tweets to your favourites, reply to tweets and send DMs. As far as tweeting is concerned, while you can send new tweets from Snaptu, you can’t add photos or videos.

Flickr access includes browsing your own, or other user’s photostreams, your photo sets and favourites. You can also browse the public timeline and perform searches on Flickr. If you prefer Picasa to Flickr, you can use Snaptu to access your Picasa photo albums. However, like with Twitter, you are not able to upload photos from your phone which really does cripple the app as far as Flickr and Picasa are concerned. Hardcore Flickr fans will be better off using the official Flickr app, which allows you to upload, resize and tag photos.

Using Facebook on Snaptu, you are able to read your messages, update your status and read the latest updates from your news feed – which some of you might be happy to know is blissfully free of third party application updates. From there, you can access your friend’s profiles, their walls, send them messages, comment and ‘like’ their updates.

Aside from using it for keeping up with your social networks, you can also use Snaptu to keep up with your favourite websites. The home screen is highly customizable, with the ability to add, remove and reorganize apps within Snaptu. Some of these apps include quick access to services such as Accuweather and the London tube schedule, an RSS app of sorts with major blogs and sites already listed, a Guardian app, and lots more. You can also add links to your favourite sites such as YouTube and LinkedIn.

Other Social Networks that have free dedicated apps available in the Blackberry App World include MySpace, Facebook, Loopt and BrightKite.

The first one reminds me of Woodstock – no, I am not that old. I went to Woodstock in 1994 at the height of my childhood and had a great time. Maybe I don't remember everything that happened out there but my fond memories of backstage Rave Stock and that 22 foot tall… Um yeah I digress, check out this Woodstock theme.

Next up for those users who want to love the Mac way of life so much but cannot commit themselves to the dark side, check out TerraNova that emulates the Mac dock as you can see below:

The next one by Oliver182 is titled Alternative for Windows 7 and it certainly is! It is colorful and I particular like the red, black and white integration.

The next one is VERY cool and is now sitting on my desktop. It is titled Water bomb and Windows 7. It depicts a mushroom cloud explosion in water on your desktop. The overall colors of this one are gloomy but hey, maybe it’s good when you are in an exploding mood!

And next to last we have an awesome Windows 7 theme called 7x Dark Transformation Pack. Check it out.

This one is very detailed, check out the other options and how the internal folders look. You will also see information embedded in the desktop like the current date and time. These are awesome additions to any theme!

Microsoft not only offers some free themes but a method to modify your own themes as well. The free Windows 7 themes provided by Microsoft are available here and there sure are a lot of them!
