6 Gmail Productivity Tips You Need To Know

Posted: 28 Jan 2010 05:30 PM PST

Every John Doe knows how to use Gmail for his daily dose of email. However, not all of us use Gmail to its complete potential. Tweaking it here and there can make you really fall in love with the amazing functionality it offers. In tune with that, today we learn a few Gmail productivity tips.

Gmail is a powerhouse of features. It’s tough to find another email provider that offeres the plethora of features that Gmail does. Just putting in a bit of time towards customizing can save you a lot of effort in the future. Here’s a low down on how I use Gmail’s awesomeness everyday.

GTDInbox

GTDInbox2

For the uninitiated, GTD stands for Getting Things Done. GTDInbox is a Firefox extension (though a Chrome version is in the offing) that makes it it downright easy for you to stay on top of your email.

Once you install it, it sets up some additional labels for you. Then, you are expected to label all your future email with one of those labels. You can sort mails into Contexts, References and Labels, then specify a status for each (i.e. Action, Working On, Someday, or Finished). These emails will now show up in a Todo list in the sidebar, and can be addressed as individual tasks. Once that’s complete you can simply process the emails as per priority. Read up on how to use here.

Quick Access To Unread Emails In The Inbox

Unread Bookmark

Here’s a Gmail productivity tip that I picked up a few days back. There are times when all you want to do is get hold of all the unread messages in your Inbox. Now you can do the same with just one word. If you are using Firefox, just search with the string “is:unread in:inbox” and bookmark the results page. Now, go to the Organize Bookmarks (that’s Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks) and click on the Bookmark you just created. At the bottom of the screen, click on more and type something easy and snappy in the “Keyword” field (I use “unread”).

Now, the next time you need all unread messages in your Inbox, simply click the location bar (hit Ctrl+L) and type the keyword you made for the bookmark.

Undo Send

Undo Send

Here’s one to help avoid all those “Oops!” moments. Google, being the awesome bunch of coders that they are, allow you to call back emails which you have just sent. Just go to Settings > Labs > Undo Send > Enable to turn on the functionality. Next time you send an email accidentally, just call it back by clicking on Undo.

Filter Me Crazy!

Filters

All those labels that you created are basically useless if you have to manually mark conversations. Use filters to automate the entire process. Create a filter by clicking on “Create a Filter” at the top of the page or by going to “Settings > Filters”. You could make one to automatically tag all emails from Social Networks and make them skip the inbox. Or make one to scan subject lines for words like “Fwd:”, “Fw:”, etc. and mark them as Forwards. The possibilities are endless with Filters.

Add Your Calendar To Gmail

GCal Gadget

It’s a major pain in the backside to fire up a new URL just to check with your Calendar. You can use the “Google Calendar Gadget” to integrate Google Calendar with Gmail. Just go to Settings > Labs and enable it.

In case you are a Remember The Milk fan, just go to Settings > Gadgets and type the following in the “Add Gadget by URL” box (remember to enable the “Add Any Gadget by URL” labs feature first):

http://www.rememberthemilk.com/services/modules/gmail/rtm.xml

The Powerful “+”

Filters are cool but tend to be messy. I mean, who really wants to create a custom search for specific words in their subject lines? It’s much easier to create specific email addresses. Gmail allows such functionality. In the eyes of Gmail, “abc@gmail.com” and “abc+keyword@gmail.com” are the same. So the next time you are signing up at a website, use the “+” operator and create a filter to apply to that email address. Life will never be easier.

With Gmail, nothing is more than a few clicks away. Particular features may be obscure, but once you know about of few Gmail productivity tips, you can really put them to good use. Gmail makes sure that your email works for you (and not the other way round). Use these tips and heave a sigh of relief.

Have I left out anything? What are you favourite tips or Gmail “hacks”? Share them with us in the comments!

How to Take Good Pictures For a Blog

Posted: 28 Jan 2010 03:30 PM PST

There are generally two distinct reasons for attaching images to blogs.

Firstly, there is the photoblog where photos are the main feature. Secondly, photos can also used as an accompaniment in blogs for visual effect.

Let's take them separately, but first some thoughts on what makes a good photograph generally.

General tips

Photographs need to engage. When someone looks at your images, if you care about their reactions at all, you want to make them stop and look. One of the easiest ways to prevent this from happening is to give them some glaring fault to find issue with. Removing as many of these faults as possible is well worth the effort. Of course, some faults cannot be fixed after the fact so the first step is how to take good pictures for your blog; bear in mind your intentions for the images.

If you had to carry a checklist around of things that annoy people who might be looking at your images, this is a good start. The images in this post are just examples that indicate the subject. Not particularly good or bad photographs.

how to take good picturesFocus: Ensure that your image is in focus, unless you intend purposefully for it not to be. Some images look great with only small parts of them in focus. It's unusual to find a good image which is all blur.

Tilt: Generally speaking, one of the easiest mistakes to make with photography is not holding the camera straight. If you intend for the image to be taken on an angle, then do it properly. Two or three degrees is annoying, twenty might work. If your image is a little off, fix it before you post it.

Lighting: It's hard. Really. But it matters. And don't think that flash is always a good solution. We have huge advantages these days in terms of the amount of correction we can make to an image in the computer, but it's always best to get it right in the first place.

how to take good picturesFraming: I could put this twice, actually. Firstly, I mean this in terms of composition of the images. Something appropriate from the background around the main subject, or the lack of something that distracts from the subject. But also, for the web, it's generally a good idea to refrain from ornate patterned frames around your images. It's just another distraction.

One more thing. There is one overriding advantage to digital photography. So assuming you're not still using film, take lots of photos. Think of lots of ideas, and then try all of them. It costs very, very little to have some extras in case things don't go as you expect.

Photoblog

For a photoblog, the images are the main – or sometimes the only – tool you have to entertain, inform or impress your viewers.

It's important to be able to add images which convey a message all on their own. Not something that requires too much in the way of explanation. In the same way that traditional photo albums rely on the images themselves, photoblogs need to be self-contained.

how to take good pictures

If you think about how the images need to look in your blog when you take the photos, you'll take them differently.

Having said that, you also have a lot of flexibility in terms of the size, proportions, framing, lighting and placement of your images. Make the most of it. Think about images you've seen that you like, and how you might take advantage of them.

Think about RSS feeds, and the possibility that your images will be seen in places other than your carefully designed blog gallery.

Take a good look at Photoblogs.org. Other people have already done some of the hard thinking.

take better pictures

Regular blog

take better picturesIn a regular blog, photographs are used for emphasis. To attract or retain interest. To illustrate or extend a point. To entertain. If I might be so bold, MakeUseOf is a great example of how this works.

You have a little more license here to include images which are not quite so self-explanatory. If your post explains a trip you took, or something you saw, you're probably going to be able to explain the image, either directly or indirectly.

Think about relevance. It's often helpful for images to amplify what the text says. To answer questions or to ask others.

It's not often a good idea to overpower a text-focused blog with large images, though there can be some advantage in doing so for impact, if you don't take advantage of the option too often.

take better picturesIf the images need to be reasonably small, then think about placement of them. If the text flows in such a way that the image only makes sense after a certain point, consider where it might best fit. Small images cannot contain too much detail. Think of a sign, for instance. If you have to show a small copy of it on the blog, with the reader still be able to decipher the text?

Consider adding a link to the image, so your readers can look at a larger copy of the image, perhaps in the blog itself, or on another site like Flickr or Picasa Web Images.

Check how the RSS feeds work for your particular blog. Is the full post going to appear in the feed? Is the text going to arrive without the supporting images?

If you don't have images which you think are appropriate, consider using those from other folk. Flickr makes it absurdly easy to blog images for which other members have set permissions. Ask anyway.

If your blog is used for any even slightly commercial purposes, ensure that you are have specific permission, or are using Creative Commons images, and attribute the source. Take a look at Sprixi.

In Summary

Read blogs. Take note of the things you like. Re-blog appropriate pictures if that's appropriate and permitted. Give credit. Learn.

It's interesting to put together a post which is full of my own opinions on how to take good pictures. I'd be disappointed if you agreed with them all, so let me know how you feel in the comments below.

3 Sources To Stream Or Download Live Music for Free

Posted: 28 Jan 2010 01:30 PM PST

download free live music onlineI have to admit I’m addicted to live music. When booking a vacation, my main concern is that I’ll miss a great show at home.

This year I’m leaving Berlin for good and it hurts to see that Gossip and Pearl Jam will perform live after I have left. I saw both bands in 2009, so I know what I’ll miss out on.

However, as I start looking around my new home I find good news all over. Shinedown are touring North America and they will play a show in Calgary at the end of May and another one in Vancouver in June. Guess where I’m headed.

The best way to refresh memories of a great show is to obtain a bootleg and re-listen to it on tape. Until about 15 years ago, it was quite complicated to get your hands on a live recording. Today, however, the internet makes it incredibly simple to stream live music free. Here are three legal resources for streaming or downloading free live music.

Wolfgang’s Vault

Allegedly the place where live music lives, Wolfgang’s Vault is one of the greatest archives to stream live music for free. Besides many unknown bands, it provides recordings from many mainstream artists. The sidebar lists the most famous performers, among them U2, Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith, and The Beatles. The available shows reach back to the early 60’s.

live music download

With a free membership, you can play the music online. VIP members receive enhanced streaming and can download several concerts as MP3.

Live Music Archive

Over 70,000 items from almost 4,000 bands can be downloaded for free from the Live Music Archive. All music is provided by trade friendly artists, who “grant fans the privilege of freely trading some of their music.” This means that all material is non-commercial, i.e. free and unsalable.

download live music

You can browse artists by name, MP3, 24-bit FLAC, lossless-only recordings, most downloaded items ever or last week and more.

To be honest, the archive is not intuitive to use. In fact, it’s rather difficult to discover new interesting bands as there is no way to browse by genre. Fortunately, it’s possible to stream most shows to a media player such as Winamp before downloading the entire ZIP file. I also like that you can search by venue or city.

LiveMetallica

Metallica has an entire website dedicated to their live shows. At The Vault you can purchase recordings of their more recent gigs. However, a handful of shows from 1982 through 2003 are free to download.

metallica live

Before you can launch the advanced download manager to receive the MP3 files, you must sign in.

As mentioned in a previous article, Coldplay handed out a free live album during concerts in 2009. The album Left Right Left Right Left can also be downloaded here.

At Tiscali Showcase you can stream live music videos for free that were played exclusively for Tiscali. You’ll find videos of The Subways, Kate Walsh, The Levellers, Amy Macdonald, and Kula Shaker.

2 Main Positioning Approaches To Make Use Of A Dual Monitor Configuration

Posted: 28 Jan 2010 11:30 AM PST

dualmonitorsetupIn the past articles I wrote about using a dual monitors configuration, we have discussed ways to do so more productive, what programs can help, and different types of users.  Through writing those articles, I have come to realize that there are basically two approaches to making use of dual monitors: having a major and minor monitor and having two equal monitors.  Let me explain what I mean.

Some people (like me) prefer to have one monitor set directly in front of them and they use it for the main tasks.  They have the second monitor either set to the side or above the main monitor and use it for minor tasks such as referencing and background tasks such as playing music, etc.  Personally, I use it for both plus I toss stuff onto the minor monitor that I want to read later and bring them to the main one when I’m ready to tackle them.

Other people like to use both monitors equally and have a dual monitor configuration where they are positioned more equally in front of them.  They could have two very important tasks that they need to do simultaneously.  I suppose a designer could have tools on one site and a view of the project on the other.  Some people may even have something they’re working on span both monitors.

What I did was scour Flickr to find examples of both approaches to making use of dual monitors.  Let’s take a look and see how it’s done.

1. The Major and Minor Monitor Approach

nicksieger_setup

It appears that nicksieger is using one monitor as the main workstation.  Notice that the keyboard, mouse and light are centered over it and how the second monitor is off to the side.  I’m not totally sure what’s going on but the main monitor seems to have some sort of coding but I don’t know about the second monitor.  Either way, it’s off to the side in more of a referencing or glancing position.

Andy-Beal_setup

Andy Beal’s setup has one monitor set to one side in order to keep an eye on social media, etc. and has some browsing going on with the main monitor.  While I do rely on browser plugins (namely Chromed Bird) to keep up with my Twitter fetish, having a secondary monitor to keep an eye on Facebook is very helpful.  Andy seems to be doing something similar.

2. The Two Equal Monitors Approach

smemon87_setup

smemon87’s setup is a good example of an equal monitor approach.  He is doing what I do when using Wordpress: use one for blogging and the other for previewing.  Basically, if you hit the “Preview” button, you get another tab opening to preview the article.  Pop it into its own window onto the second monitor and it’ll refresh whenever you hit “Preview” again.  Very cool!

memoreks_setup

memoreks seems to be doing the “browsing in one and email in the other” thing.  For me, I’d have to do one of these at a time.  Basically that’s why I prefer one monitor to be dominant.  If I’m browsing, I’ll pop the browser into the main monitor.  If I’m working on an email, I’ll switch that program over.  Some people prefer to have them both on an even playing field and that’s OK too.

There you have it, both basic approaches with some good examples of each.  Which approach do you prefer?  Or would you rather have both monitors so close it seems they’re looking back at you? Like tmray02’s setup here.

tmray02_eyes

Let us know your preferred dual monitor configuration.  What do you use your main monitor for?

10 Cool Online Apps and Interactive Features Offered by NASA

Posted: 28 Jan 2010 10:30 AM PST

NASA_LogoI love NASA – plain and simple. There’s no getting around it. While my colleagues at work spend their lunch break surfing the daily news, I have my nose buried in the latest NASA mission, looking at images from the latest NASA Mars rovers update, or watching the NASA TV live feed.  What I love the most about NASA is not only that it’s one of the most high-tech organizations that’s constantly pushing the edges of science and space exploration, but they also expend tremendous effort and resources to promote space and technology education.

One of the things that NASA does very well is utilizing the latest Internet technologies to provide space and aeronautical enthusiasts with a number of extremely useful and functional online applications. Some of these apps are simple games or slide shows, but other NASA tools provide you with the ability to glimpse directly into some of the information and data feeds gathered by specific NASA missions – such as the Mars rovers and the International Space Station. In this post, I’d like to provide an overview of what I consider to be 10 of NASA’s coolest online applications.

10 Amazing NASA Apps and Interactive Features

Browsing through the NASA website, you could easily get lost in the huge volume of content, images, videos and other features. There’s so much to see and read that it’s too easy to lose yourself for hours in the amazing Sci-Fi world of NASA. One of the NASA apps that I visit more often than any other is NASA’s International Space Station tracking system. The idea that there are human crew members floating in orbit inside this technological wonder is fascinating. This is why I find the ISS tracker so fascinating – it’s cool to see what part of the earth that they’re over, whether they’re in daylight or night, and when any “sighting opportunities” arise.

nasa2

And speaking of the International Space Station, why not go one step beyond seeing where they are located, and instead check out the Earth from the perspective of the ISS crew members?

nasa3

NASA devotes an entire section of their website to an amazing and constantly updated photo gallery of views of the earth from the ISS. The example above comes from a recent update NASA provided of the station’s view of Haiti in the aftermath of the destruction there.

While NASA can be educational and information, it also knows how to have a little fun. The next two applications offer kids (or adults!) the opportunity to explore a few interesting concepts about what future plans NASA has for human space exploration. For example, the Lunar Outpost flash application lets you explore NASA’s proposed solution for a human populated Lunar Outpost. Hover your mouse over an object and see a larger image. Click on the object and get a detailed description of the proposed vehicle or building and what it’s purpose would be as part of the Lunar Outpost.

nasa4

The Space Agency also created a wonderfully informative (and graphically intensive) application called NASA @ Home and City. This application lets you virtually explore a household or major industries like air travel, automotive and even sports, and it shows you in a fun and interactive way how NASA technologies are integrated throughout your world.

what future plans does nasa have

NASA Home and City reveals that NASA has had a far greater impact on technology and society than the agency gets credit for. Even though the application is educational, the amazing graphics and fluid interaction really makes it a fun virtual world to explore.

Next up is one of my favorite NASA innovations – the EXN3D. What is this, you ask? Well it isn’t the name of an Android on Star Wars (although I’m sure the engineers who thought up the concept are probably Star Wars fans). The EXN3D is the name of “3D Binoculars” that you can use to view unique NASA imagery from a 3D perspective.

what future plans does nasa have

Not long after I wrote an article at MakeUseOf on Google Mars, I was contacted by some folks affiliated with the Pathfinder Innovation Challenge about helping to promote their efforts. I’d like to finally take this opportunity to introduce the Challenge to MUO readers. It is a collaborative effort between NASA, JPL-Caltech and Microsoft to provide students with the ability to create real-world innovative technologies based on Mars Exploration.

latest mars rovers updates

There are five “leagues” where participants produce innovative creations and technologies in order to compete for prizes like a school visit from a Mars mission team member, or a trip to the MSL launch, just to name a couple. Just a note, Microsoft clearly created the Pathfinder website, because it doesn’t work in Firefox. So, if you visit the site, you have to use IE. The contest is already underway, but watch for the announcement of the winners and what sort of innovative ideas they came up with.

Next up is an example of the sort of amazing high-resolution imagery that you’ve come to expect from NASA. The most impressive gallery I’ve found on the site are some of the images from WISE - the wide-field infrared survey explorer scanning the entire sky using infrared.

latest nasa mission

As you can see above, some of the imagery from this device is just breathtaking. The mission of WISE is to pick up objects in the sky and in space that is otherwise invisible to simple telescopes or cameras. In infrared light, objects floating in the darkness glow – allowing this device to identify near-Earth asteroids and comets.

Another amazing application on the NASA website is International Space Station Photosynths. In this application, you can take a virtual tour through the International space station by clicking on the panoramic-style views created from photographs in and around the space station.

latest nasa mission

Explore the U.S. Laboratory, the European Laboratory, the Japanese Laboratory and more! You’ll need to install Microsoft Silverlight for the app to work. You just click to install on the pop-up box, and within a few seconds you’ll be surfing through the ISS.

If your thing is Aeronautics, then you may want to have some fun during your lunch break by playing NASA’s Aeronautics Memory Game.

nasa9

The game goes through images of all kinds of aircraft technologies – some of them fairly impressive designs – and attempt to create matches. You don’t really need to know a whole lot about aeronautics to play the game, but if you’re an enthusiast, you’ll love the game simply for the images.

Last but not least, for iPhone users who love everything to do with NASA, the space agency offers its fans a very cool iPhone or iPod Touch NASA app which delivers all of the latest fascinating news and content from NASA directly to your mobile device.

nasa10

This very cool iPhone app is like having your pulse on all of the greatest Space news and technological achievements right on your mobile phone. Never again will you miss a launch date or miss out on the latest images coming from Mars. All of it will be delivered directly to you – free of charge.

Are you a NASA enthusiast? Do you have any of your own favorite applications or specific pages that you enjoy from the space agency’s website? Share your feedback in the comments section below!

Easily Change Computer Settings Instantly With Quick Config

Posted: 28 Jan 2010 09:30 AM PST

These days most people have more than one Internet connection. Like I have one for home, another while I am traveling and then add to then, the one I get at my workplace. Now, I happen to use my laptop at home, on the go and at the office as well. Anyone who has been in a similar situation knows, where I am going with this.

The problem is that you have to constantly change your computer network settings to match the place and Internet connection that you are using. Ideally, you would want to be able to switch these settings instantly, perhaps that is why we define different network connections with different settings. Keep in mind that these still need to be enabled and disabled explicitly.

Then there is another situation where you need certain services only for some time, but they startup every time; slowing down the computer. Developers would be able to relate to this. Often one needs to install resource-hogging Database Management System or Servers to write and test code. Ideally, you don’t need them to be running or bothering you when you are using your computer just for browsing the web. Many people even install another copy of the operating system to take care of such situations.

Quick Config can be downloaded as a portable version or an installer package to quickly change computer settings. Fire up Quick Config and you will be greeted by a welcome screen. Click “Create new” under Profile and you will be able to create a new profile. You can specify a name, description, hot key and a custom icon that will be used to represent the profile. Within the profile, you can specify your preferences for a number of items. These are broadly classified into Application, Network, System, Browsers and Desktop. Each one lets you choose your preferences for a different set of settings.

Under Applications you can specify the default browser and email client as well create your own set of startup applications.

Network connections rids you of the problem that I mentioned above. It detects all the network connections that are configured on your computer automatically. You can then specify which one you want to use for the profile and then specify its network settings as well. Not only this, you can also change the domain, computer name, add entries to the hosts file, configure routes, shared folders and network drives all specific to this very profile.

The System entry lets you change computer settings like sound levels, sound themes and default printers but the real strength lies in the ability to specify which services to enable for which profile. This single feature has been a God send for me personally. In addition, you can also change registry values for different profiles. This can come in handy if you want to change environment variables.

The Browsers section detects all the browsers on my computer and lets you change subtle settings like the home page, profile location etc.

Last but not the least, the Desktop section can be used to change computer display settings like the resolution and color depth for different profiles.

Keep in mind that all the plug-ins are disabled by default. Changing the preferences for a plug-in doesn’t automatically enable it and you would have to do that explicitly. So if things don’t look the way they should, double check that you have enabled the desired plug-in

Apart from the dozen or so settings that Quick Config lets you change for your computer, you can also customize Quick Config via the Settings. You can for example, enable or disable plug-ins (I didn’t find any additional plug-ins), change default language, autostart Quick Config with Windows and do other similar thing.

Quick Config is really an awesome application that takes the pain and repetition out of changing settings ever so often. If you can relate to the situations I described in the beginning then you must check out Quick Config. On the flip side, if you have your own clever ways or applications to switch settings easily, we would love to hear about them.

SnagIt Beta – Possibly The Most Advanced Screen Capture Freeware Tool [Mac]

Posted: 28 Jan 2010 08:30 AM PST

If you blog, you know very well that your posts will be so much better if you include pictures with them. Well, at least they will be more visually attractive. Try to look at those big names in the blogosphere, they are richly adorned with pictures.

Among the many ways of acquiring pictures, making screenshots is one of the easiest. But that doesn’t mean that good quality screen capture is easy to get. Just like taking pictures in the real world, the quality of the camera is just as important as the man behind it.

On my continuing quest searching for the best screen capture freeware for Mac, I stumbled into this free app called SnagIt (Beta) – which comes from the same company that created Jing.

B is for Beta

Before we go further, please note that the Mac version of this screen capture freeware app is still in beta. It means that you should expect glitches here and there, and the possibility that this app will turn into paid app after the beta period is over.

The first time you run the screen capture freeware, it will be available in three places: Dock, Menubar and the side of the screen (as a small tab that will slide open when you hover your mouse above it).

screen capture freeware

The big red button is the capture button, and next to it is the button to choose whether you want to capture the whole window or only a specific area of the screen. Below the red button are the options to include the mouse pointer in the shot and to copy the result to the clipboard.

Specifying the hotkey to do the capturing can be done on the fly. You just type in your preferred combination, or use the default “Command + Control + 1” for an All-in-one capture (screen area) and “Command + Control + 2” for a Window Capture.

Same with any other good screen capture application, SnagIt includes a cross-hair to mark the captured area. But SnagIt has something more: a lens to enlarge the cross section area. With this tool, you can take a precise screen capture.

screen capture freeware

Clicking the gear button below will give you more capturing options: to edit after capturing it and to delay the capture for a specified time.

screen capture freeware

If you choose the “Edit” option, a very sophisticated editing window will appear right after you take the shot.

screen capture program

The set of tools available here is beyond any other screen capture freeware app that I’ve tried so far. You can access everything from the editing window, the Tools menu or by using shortcut keys combination.

However – since the app is still in beta – there are no “Effects” available yet. They are “coming soon”.

It’s also possible to edit more than one image and combine them into one. This is also a feature that is not available in any other screen capture applications.

One additional preference

Every time I try new applications, I always visit their Preferences (Command + Comma) to look for any further customizations and options available. This time is no different.

Most items in SnagIt Preferences are already available from the little side window. However, there’s one options from the Advanced tab. You can set SnagIt to always create new image at a specified size.

This option will be very useful if you are required to continuously provide images at a certain size.

Footnotes and wish list

After trying out this application, I conclude that this one might be the most advanced free screen capture application available for Mac today. Most power users will find the extra bells and whistles very useful. However, everyday users might find all of these features to be confusing and might never use most of them.

Maybe the developer could give options to enable/disable “Pro” features. And if they want to put price tag to the final version, they could make the “Lite” version available for free.

The app could also be made simpler by eliminating the two different ways to capture. Instead, make it automatic: “one click” to capture window and “click and drag” to capture area.

There’s no need for the extra option for the delayed capture mode. Just use additional key combination to enable it. For example, pressing Shift key while capturing will delay the process for X seconds.

There’s a short video tutorial about using SnagIt available at TechSmith website if you want to learn more.

ZOMGies! Oh My God, Zombies! – A Zombie Survival Game

Posted: 28 Jan 2010 07:30 AM PST

I have been rolling out Mac after Mac after Mac to 121 end-users today and they all used to be Windows users. So I need to relax for a minute and chill!

My time waster for the day is ZOMGies! Or as I like to call it — Oh My God Zombies! It is a fast paced shoot ‘em up zombie survival game that you play with the mouse and keyboard Quake-style. You go after zombies with a few weapons. In the beginning, there is only a little pistol and a crow bar. But as you go on, you will unlock new and more powerful weapons. There are also items you can shoot on the screen to cause reactions to the environment. Let us check it out.

You can start by going to this URL. That will bring you to this screen that will allow you to start a new Zombgies quest or continue a saved one.

I clicked on NEW GAME and was pleasantly greeted with some basic instructions for how to play this zombie survival game. They show you that you can run up, down, left and right by either using the arrow keys or the W, A, S and D keys. You use the mouse to aim at the zombies and the left mouse button to fire! You shoot explosives (barrels) to kill everything on the screen and other goodies will give you points or health.

You are the dude in the pink pajamas! Just a side note, do not sleep in pink pajamas because if Zombies attack everyone will see them! You start off being chased by the horde. Simply move the mouse and start shooting! Aim at them and blast away and watch your points grow.

As you hit the enemies, you will see a life meter appear over there head. When the meter is totally depleted, they are dead. The same thing goes for you. Your health is represented by that red bar in the upper left hand corner of the interface. If it totally depletes, you are dead. The world is lost… Or you can play again!

You can only carry two weapons at a time. To start, the only ones unlocked are the crow bar and the pistol. But as you get more weapons, you will choose your favorite two or the ones you feel will be the best fit with the upcoming board.

When you find a new weapon, you will see this screen asking you to select your weapons again. Here, I found an UZI which is a machine gun and kills much faster than the pistol.

Hitting that purple barrel is a good thing and it will kill everyone (except for you magically) and clear the screen of bad guys.

Keep on playing and killing to advance and gain more weapons. The flame thrower is simply awesome but I will leave it to you and I will not ruin the game. I beat it in about an hour. And now I have to return to the real world of tech support. Sadly, there are no zombies in my office that need killing – until I start the game again that is!

I wrote another post about a different awesome zombie survival game. Check it out!
