Going Twitter Crazy With Echofon For Mac, Firefox and iPhone + Echofon Pro Giveaway!

Posted: 11 Dec 2009 05:00 PM PST

I don’t consider myself a hardcore Twitterer (tweeter?) even though I joined the Twitter scene pretty early on. I only started actively tweeting when social networks began aggregating content among each other. Since I’m an organisational freak, that worked out well for me. I pulled in stories from my tumblelog, loved tracks from my Last.fm account and my published works from MakeUseOf. That gave my followers something to read while I’m not actively updating on Twitter.

There are several really great Twitter desktop clients. TweetDeck and Seesmic Desktop seem to be pulling ahead of everyone in the race to be the best. I’m a TweetDeck user but to be honest, I don’t really like it. The interface is too “clunky”. The only reason I stuck with it for so long was because it allowed me to add multiple accounts and display mentions, tweets and DMs simultaneously. I have to admit that it’s quite a good tool; a power tool actually, for power Tweeps.

I’ve been contemplating on switching clients but haven’t quite found the right one. As a Mac user, I noticed Echofon as soon as it stepped into the scene. As tempted as I was, I couldn’t pull myself away from TweetDeck. But as of now, I can proudly announce that I’m a loving user of Echofon and it’s family of products: Echofon for iPhone, Echofon for Firefox and Echofon for Facebook.

Find out why.

Echofon for Mac

Well first of all, Echofon’s interface (as simple as it may be) is much more pleasing. Its single window, multiple-tabbed interface with the sliding drawer is really easy to use. New tweets are highlighted and notified by Growl.

Clicking on a username invokes the drawer, showing you their tweets, followers and the those following — the latter is something TweetDeck can’t do.

What I really like from Echofon is the conversation viewer. We all know how messy mentions can become. One after another, they sort of get lost; and in TweetDeck, there isn’t really a way to view the flow of a conversation. With Echofon however, it detects if you have a conversation going on between another user. It’s indicated by the speech bubble next to the tweet.

Click on it and the drawer slides out with the entire conversation you had with the other person, making it really easy to recall what’s been thrown around.

Besides that, Echofon also includes the other basic Twitter functions and features like Direct Messaging, Follow, Unfollow, Block, Posting Photos, Link Shortening, Multiple Accounts and Search.

You can search for hashtags, mentions and user profiles. It will also show you the latest trending topics on Twittersphere.

And for me, Echofon’s trump card against TweetDeck is the ability to display all of your tweets. Scroll all the way to the bottom and it will automatically load earlier tweets. Twitter Lists will be implement in the next version.

And that’s not all. Oh no. It doesn’t end here. We also have to talk about Echofon for iPhone.

Echofon for iPhone

The interface looks very much like an upside-down version of its desktop counterpart. The similarity doesn’t end there — the iPhone app will do everything that Echofon for Mac is capable of, except for the conversation viewer which I mentioned above.

However, Echofon for iPhone does offer a very subtle, nice touch. You realise how many tweets often contain links? Echofon will open those links in its integrated browser. This allows you to click on a link, browse and see what’s up then easily return to Echofon. I really appreciate that feature. Now, I don’t hesitate to click on a link anymore.

I have to mention that Echofon is one of the few fully-functional iPhone Twitter apps that support push notification. In its free version, push notifications are limited to those sent by other Echofon users. In the Pro version, you’ll get the notifications regardless of the means by which they were sent; making it even easier to track your mentions and DMs on the go.

Now I’m sure that you’re wondering, what happens if you use both the iPhone app and desktop client? Does that mean that you’ll notified of the tweets twice? Fortunately, no — Echofon does all the dirty work for you once the setting is enabled in Preferences. If you have already read the tweets on your iPhone, they will be synced to Echofon’s server and marked as read. When you get home and launch Echofon for Mac, there will not be any annoying notifications to nag you about the 281 tweets that you’ve received throughout the day. Again, subtle but appreciated features.

How does the free version differ from the Pro version? For one, push notification only works between Echofon clients in the free version and is ad-supported. Secondly, the Pro version will allow you to add multiple accounts, change the theme, upload your photos to Flickr, has a landscape keyboard and a couple more features. If you don’t use those features, the free version is more than capable to handle your daily tweeting needs. Seriously.

Now, let’s quickly talk about Echofon’s iPhone app for Facebook.

Echofon for Facebook

What’s the difference between the official Facebook app and this one? Well, this one is simpler to navigate. It’s not packed with features but it will definitely help you get around Facebook and show you the things you really need to see. Here’s an example: if someone commented on my status, the official Facebook app will inform me via a notification bar at the bottom of the screen. I have to click on that to view my notifications and click on another link to view the comment. With Echofon for Facebook, there’s a page dedicated to notifications, where you can easily view what’s happening. I click on the friend who commented on my status and voila, the conversation appears.

Additionally, Echofon for Facebook also supports push notification for Facebook messaging between Echofon clients. This adds the functionality of SMS into a social network client. (For those interested in a proper messaging app for iPhone, be sure to read my article on WhatsApp). Sadly, it is also ad-supported but that hardly affects its usability.

In conclusion, if Echofon were to pride themselves with one achievement, it would definitely be subtlety.

Echofon for Mac is available for Macs running 10.5 and higher. For Windows users, try Echofon for Firefox; a fully-fledged Twitter client that works right out of a browser. Echofon for iPhone Free is available from the iTunes App Store [iTunes link] and so is Echofon for Facebook [iTunes link]. Echofon Pro for iPhone goes for $4.99.

Here’s the fun part: we’re giving away several promotional codes for Echofon Pro for iPhone courtesy of naan studios. These codes are redeemable in the iTunes Store worldwide. If you’d like to grab one, do something to attract our attention in the comments section. Winners will be picked randomly. Make sure to fill in your email address so that we can contact you.

Which Twitter desktop client or iPhone app do you use? Will you switch over to Echofon?

Fedora 12 – A Visually-Pleasing, Highly-Configurable Linux Distro You Might Want To Try

Posted: 11 Dec 2009 03:00 PM PST

Rounding out the fall releases from the big cheeses in Linux comes Fedora 12. Fedora is a popular Linux distribution funded by Red Hat, the most profitable Linux corporation active today. Fedora usually sits within the top three or four most popular distributions at distrowatch.com.

Much of the company and community work that goes into Fedora will find its way into Red Hat Enterprise Linux, the commercial Linux version used by governments and businesses around the world. You might compare the relationship between Red Hat and Fedora to Novell and openSUSE.

For this reason, Fedora is a well respected and highly popular distribution, even if their development may skew towards the enterprise. Thus Fedora might be considered geared for the more experienced and power user. While many aspects of this American-based operating system are quite user-friendly, other areas might require some prior Linux knowledge to fully appreciate.

fedora 12 linux

One area in which Fedora excels is the implementation of the latest technology in Linux and Open Source software. In fact, many characterize Fedora as cutting-edge. This policy sometimes yields unexpected or undesired results, but the many users who prefer to live on the edge receive a new version once or sometimes twice within a calendar year, although several recent releases have slipped passed their scheduled release date due to issues in the system. While some become impatient waiting for releases, Fedora is one of the few major distributions to delay releases if some major bug is found, which speaks to their level of commitment to excellence as opposed to marketing.

Despite all efforts, all software projects end up releasing with some bugs and Fedora is not immune. The latest bruhaha came with Fedora 12 and its released ability to install new software without giving the root (system administrator) password. First filed as a bug and later a publicized as a feature, whatever the true intention, this has been patched for those who update to now required the root password to install new software. While skipping the root password for new software installation is a feature in several desktop distributions, Fedora, like its openSUSE counterpart, is used by many small and home business owners for its relationship to the parent-company’s commercial product yet with a low or no cost implementation. Thus any security lax is undesirable.

Version 12

In addition to Fedora’s commercial uses, it remains a favorite of many desktop users. The latest hardware support and software innovations go into Fedora making it one the most desirable distributions for those who regularly update their hardware or crave the latest in software goodies.

For example, this release of Fedora uses one of the newest versions of Xorg X Server, which provides the graphical platform for window environments. This brings lots of useful and fun goodies. One of these is the ability to use multiple pointing devices, such as two mice or a mouse and a tablet, at the same time. This could be convenient for those who switch devices often or in the case where two users might want to work on the same desktop at the same time. Official descriptions sound as though two pointers might appear on screen although tests here showed only one. However, multiple devices did control the single pointer.

fedora 12 linux

Speaking of video cards, in the past, if one’s video card supported it, multiple displays resulted in a cloned desktop (same one desktop used on all monitors) while many others, especially with NVIDIA hardware, had only one working display by default. But now with Xorg X Server 1.7.1 included in Fedora 12 many hardware combinations boot to a Xinerama desktop (one larger desktop scaled across two or more displays). This even includes NVIDIA-based machines thanks to Fedora’s use of the Nouveau video driver. Other X improvements include enhanced DisplayPort support for Intel users while ATI/AMD users can enjoy Kernel Mode Setting out-of-the-box and install 3D support through Fedora’s package management.

More hardware improvements this release include better webcam, tablet, and Bluetooth support. Bluetooth now has plug-n-play on-demand capabilities – enabling upon plug-in and disabling upon extraction. Webcam support has been added for lot of additional models and extra features in the underlying code with emphasis on v4l and v4l2 interoperability. Tablet support has been increased in many popular applications used with tablets such as Inkscape and GIMP. Some improvements include velocity and pressure control and handwriting recognition.

fedora 12 linux

Some additional software improvements include i686-optimized performance, faster software and update installation, and networking software improvements. The i686 optimization allow Fedora to run faster on most hardware. Faster software installation has been improved by using a more aggressive compression ratio and updates have been further quickened by providing just the differences in packages rather than having to download and install entire packages. Networking has been improved to add more profile and hardware options.

Software

YUM is the package management solution found in Fedora. It’s quite powerful at the commandline, but a graphical front-end is included. Software Management is found in the menu and activates PackageKit. At first I was a bit skeptical due to previous experiences with it, but it proved to work admirably in Fedora. The first use of it did seem to stall on updating the databases and after 20 minutes or so, I closed it thinking it broken. However, my second attempt found it functioning normally – installing software, resolving dependencies, and making menu entries. The update function is also handled with PackageKit and I found it to work equally as well.

fedora 12 review

This release features KDE 4.3.2, GNOME , Linux 2.6.31.5, Xorg X Server 1.7.1, and GCC 4.4.2. It includes the KOffice office suite, Empathy instant messenger, Evolution PIM, Juk music player, and lots of games. Fedora’s repositories contain tons of other popular software as well. For non-OSS and other goodies, perhaps easyLife can be of service. It allows users to install and configure extras such as “sudo,” proprietary graphic drivers, non-free software like Flash, java, and multimedia codecs, and Skype.

Personal Experiences

While Fedora has a large and loyal userbase, I’ve never had much luck with it. Previous versions wouldn’t even install due to errors in detecting my hard drive’s geometry and partitions as configured by other partitioning tools. I never really found Fedora very attractive either and I’ve always felt that their software stack was either lacking or just not in sync with my needs. I admit I’m not a Fedora fan, but I can certainly acknowledge its worth and popularity with others and admire its cutting-edge philosophy.

This particular release didn’t complain about my hard drives and installed into a usable system. The live CD uses Ext4 by default and while many others have written about the performance advantages of Ext4, I’ve found Ext4 to be slow on my hardware. I’ve spoken with a few others experiencing this and we have no idea why other than to speculate it’s due to older hardware.

fedora 12 review

However, I still had issues with Fedora’s bootloader install. Given the choice where to install its GRUB (boot loader), I chose the first sectors of the root partition (where Fedora was actually installed) so that I could just chainload from my existing bootloader. This was because I already had several Linux installs that Fedora didn’t detect and (ok, I admit it’s mainly) because my current bootloader was quite attractive. However, Fedora messed up and corrupted or otherwise rendered my currently bootloader unusable while not installing its bootloader either. To some new users, this could be catastrophic. However, I seem to be a lone sufferer of this condition as I didn’t see any other reports of it. If one leaves the bootloader configuration at default or chooses to install on the MBR, then it’s likely to work just fine.

My first impression of Fedora was “whoooo.” I thought the login screen was pretty and I was tickled to see the expanded dual-monitor desktop. This feeling remained through login when I saw the actual desktop spanning across both my monitors. I was soon disappointed that the secondary 17 inch display was detected first and auto-configured to be the main screen and that it was rendered in a resolution of only 1024×768. For the first time using my hardware setup, the font sizes were actually rendered differently on each display as well. This was unsettling. I tried to adjust the monitor size in KDE’s System settings, but this confused X and after some overlapping and reverting, it gave up. It then just gave me a cloned setup. I have confidence I could manually adjust this if I wished to use Fedora, but I wonder if new users would just run screaming in the night.

Fedora has some individual configuration tools (like for a firewall or networking), but its far from complete and they offer no control center as found in Mandriva or openSUSE. Most things are auto-configured these days, but there are times when individual customization is needed.

Final Thoughts

Although my experiences with Fedora over the years have been riddled with installation issues, humdrum looks, and a lack of tools and default software, I seem to be in the minority. What works really well for me, my work flow, and my hardware may not work that well for you – and vise versa. This is why a particular distro may receive a bad review from one writer and a glowing review from another. It all boils down to personal experience. I’m reminded of this every time I try to use Fedora.

fedora 12 features

I know in my heart of hearts that Fedora is a good distro, even if it’s not my cup of tea. It’s backed by Red Hat, it is the first to include the latest in hardware support and new software technologies, and its developers seem more concerned with quality than marketing. It has a large userbase and always receives good reviews. Appearances can be pimped, software can easily be added, and most hardware is auto-configured. The only way to be sure is to try it yourself. It just might be the distro for you.

5 Tips To Improve Your Public Speaking Skills

Posted: 11 Dec 2009 01:00 PM PST

tutorial on public speakingTruly eloquent individuals hardly go unnoticed as they instantly give a vibe of being engaging speakers. Attaining such status should be essential if you want to be heard, whether in a speech, informally debating with partners on a topic, or even expressing your perspective in Twitter.

However, as we approach the end of a decade marked by abbreviated communication (e.g. informal writing through e-mail and chat) and the start of another that seems to be dominated by even shorter messages (think SMS text messages and micro-blogging), it's easier to forget to practice coming up with longer, thoughtful remarks.

Here is a tutorial on public speaking with 5 tips on improving how you deliver a speech or message.

Engage your audience

Help your audience stay focused by choosing topics they can relate to and including in your message carefully, especially at the beginning. Doing that could make a difference in whether or not you get someone to become engaged, then believe and share your perspective. Make a “tour” of your potential audience's minds. Sure, you may have a lot of opinionated content you are eager to share but when you deliver a message, speaking about topics outside of the audience's interests means that they less likely to see your point.

Get to know your audience

In order to pick the right combination of topics to focus on so your audience will become interested at once, research what the audience is interested in. Give the audience something that they can take away and do for themselves. What is the impact on the audience's lives? Stand out from the rest and avoid topics that people have already heard or read.

Stay positive

Aside from giving the audience hints on what they really want to hear about, other appealing factors for the audience include positive messages that focus less on failures. tutorial on public speakingIn a University of Pennsylvania study of presidential nomination speeches from 1900 to 1984, it was found that American voters choose candidates who express optimism and ruminate less. In other words, using a pessimistic approach to explain the causes of problems, and attempting to make more explanations for failures made candidates look more helpless and less appealing to the public.

Susceptibility to helplessness is a psychologically discouraging sign to the public, who is looking for confident candidates to boost up their trust in government officials. Even if you are not delivering a presidential candidate message, you should aim to make optimistic remarks and minimize talking about unresolved problems or failures, unless you are discussing how to attack them in your speech.

Be concise

When delivering a speech, be concise and end it earlier than the time you are given (the audience will thank you). Sometimes, adding relevant metaphors may seem appropriate, but don’t waste time including too many. That is because every single part of the message is potentially a moment for you to hold your audience's interest together and for people to remember.

You should craft each sentence to reflect something uniquely brilliant. Thus, including many metaphors challenges your audience's trust that they should stay focused in your topic.

Give your work a captivating title

Dedicating time to craft the body of your message is as important as creating an original name for your speech or message. This is never stressed enough – your title should wake the audience's interest so they anticipate reading or listening to your message. Think of the title as your red carpet to grab your audience's attention. This statement must summarize your main point in a unique way.
tutorial on public speaking
As you are figuring out a concise title, try to be more general than too specific. Think about your audience when you name your work and how it relates to them. Compare "The Psychology of eloquent speeches" with "Tips on giving convincing messages." The former includes the name of a scientific field that may not interest a number of people.

In closing, practicing building your concise, positive, invaluable, and appropriately-named message around your audience can ensure that your point gets across and stays fresh in people’s minds.

How To Buy Brand New Games Online With Incredible Discounts

Posted: 11 Dec 2009 11:00 AM PST

games discounts codesA lot of people simply can’t afford gaming as a hobby – personally, or for their children. Each year, more and more people resort to illegal downloading. Recent studies have proven that my bunny cries every time you crack a game.

Games don’t have to be that expensive. Sure, we want the developers and marketers to get paid, but why waste all that extra money on optical media, packaging and shipping?

With the internet at our disposal, we can cut our costs to a minimum. Gaming can become affordable – even cheap! You just need to know where to look for discounts.

Online Game Key Stores

A friend recently brought this concept to my attention. These guys cut their prices by skipping packaging, shipping, and any other vulturing costs. Better yet, they buy their serial codes all over the world, often in Asia – depending where it is cheapest.

As a result, you can buy these game keys at almost ludicrous prices – the very day these games hit the market! On brand new games, you can often save up to 20 bucks. With older games, you don’t even need to pay 20 bucks!

Even the convinced pirates have reason to be turned. Unlike ‘illegal keys’, the ones you buy on this site can be used to play online, on games likes Left 4 Dead 2 and Modern Warfare 2.

Do note that you’re only buying serial codes. Albeit perfectly legal keys, not all of these sites offer downloads. We will expressively state where this is, or isn’t the case – so read carefully.

Otherwise, this means that you will have to find the game somewhere else. Luckily, after purchase, downloading your game from torrents and Rapidshare is not illegal.

G2PLAY.net

The first serial store I ever discovered, G2Play is one of the best you’ll find. They’ve got a number of big titles in their arsenal, and often play close on new releases, selling Left 4 Dead 2 and Modern Warfare 2 keys the very day it came out.

games discounts codes

G2Play also offers reliable downloads for nearly all of its games. If, and how the download is supported is always included in the game’s description. Regular sources are Steam, the EA Download Manager, and even dedicated servers.

OnlineKeyStore

OnlineKeyStore claims to be the number one CD Key and Account selling site. The store’s content is rather similar to that of G2Play, but small price differences are far from strange. It’s wise to check several of these stores before you decide where to buy – they’re all cheap, but some are cheaper.

games discounts codes

This site offers downloads for a lot, but not all of its games. To find out, you will need to look at the game’s details. The icons in the topright corner will tell you what you need to know.

game keys buy

Example given, the above screenshot tells us that the keys are in store and can be sent immediately after purchase. You can download the game via Steam, or using a dedicated server (from the developer). For an icons ‘legend’, click here.

Ozcdkeys

Ozcdkeys looks rather amateuristic compared to the latter two. It also nearly doesn’t offer any downloads. You might be able to download some games via Steam or the EA Download Manager, but that’s for you to find out.

game keys buy

Nevertheless, Ozcdkeys shouldn’t be too readily discarded. They often offer the lowest prices, going below even the two aforementioned sites. The store is slightly less automated, and prices are stated in a random number of currencies, but it’s a small pain to save that extra money.

These are three decent options, but there are others. Do you know any other sites to buy cheap games online? Share with us in the comments section below.

How To Customise Toodledo To Productively Get Things Done In Your Day

Posted: 11 Dec 2009 09:01 AM PST

getting things doneMy Cloud Getting Things Done (GTD) setup uses Gmail, Toodledo, and Google Calendar.  For mobile access to my tasks I use Toodledo on my iPhone, along with native iPhone Mail and Calendar programs synced with Gmail and Google Calendar.

Here’s how I configure Toodledo’s fields settings to use it for GTD. The fields I need are Context, Due Date, Repeat, and Trashcan. My personal version uses Tags as well, which provides a little more fine-grained control over the display of tasks within standard GTD Contexts: Work, Email, Calls, Projects, Someday/Maybe, and Waiting For. (For example, I have the tag ‘MUO’, so I can track my Makeuseof.com tasks within the context of Projects, Emails, or Work).

Toodledo Fields

One of Outlook’s nice features is the ability to turn an email into a task, either by dragging it onto the Tasks button in the Navigation Pane, or by right clicking the message and sending it to the Tasks folder. Either way, a new Task is created and whatever information is needed can be added. The body of the email becomes the body of the new Task.

Toodledo cannot do this yet (it’s been discussed at length in Toodledo’s forums).  But nevertheless, I’ve found an easy way to turn an email message into a Toodledo task. Here’s how, using Toodledo’s ability to set up a task via email.

import export

First, find the “Import/Export/Sync” button on the Toodledo sidebar . Click it.

impexconfig

Click on the Configure link on the Email Import / Export panel.

emailservice

Check “Enable e-mail importing“, then click “Save Changes“.  Toodledo then generates a private email address to import tasks, and enables email importing on the server. The address should be changed periodically for security.

gmailcontact

Create a contact in an email client to forward messages to the Toodledo Task List.

To turn a message into a task, simply forward the email to Toodledo; by default, it comes in without a context, due-date, or any other metadata. The body of the email is saved in the new Task’s note field, which is very convenient. I often forward tasks this way, then edit them later when I review my workflow. But there’s still another trick up Toodledo’s sleeve.

Toodledo provides scripting syntax to set the fields in a new task by listing them in the email subject. Eleven fields can be set this way; only the ones in my Getting Things Done implementation are shown here.

  1. Due-Date: the # symbol, followed by a date, sets the due-date. Note that the alternative syntax that Toodledo employs for dates is allowed: “#tomorrow”, “#next tuesday”.
  2. Context: the “@” symbol, followed by the name of the Context. For example, using GTD-standard Contexts, I use “@@work” to add the task to the @work context.
  3. Tag: the “%” symbol, followed by the tag or tags. I use Tags as well as Contexts. Example: “%MUO”.

forward

It’s easy to keep an empty inbox when messages can be processed into tasks on the fly. Capturing everything in workflow really improves productivity. Toodledo and its iPhone app provides a great free solution for task management.

What free applications are you using for your workflow? How do you do mobile time and task management?

Top 2 Free Online Adventure Single Player RPG Games

Posted: 11 Dec 2009 07:00 AM PST

I am very picky about the games I play. I got used to in depth text games in the late eighties on my C64 like Kyrandia. That was fun on a 1200 bps modem!

Nowadays most games are graphic-intensive and have no real story line. These two games are fun and will open up your mind and imagination! The first one is text and ASCII graphics based and the second one is a full on flash RPG! Enjoy.

I love playing online role playing games aka RPG's. Sometimes I want to play against the system and not against real people. I will show you 2 awesome free online adventure single player RPG games you can play by yourself. The first one is an old time favorite of mine called The Kingdom of Loathing aka KOL.

You go to The Kingdom of Loathing and create a new account. Click the Create a character button.

free online adventure single player rpg games

They will give you a bit of the background story above the dialogue to create your username password and character type. Think of The Kingdom of Loathing as a fun, less geeky type of Dungeon and Dragons. No one will tie you up a flag pole for playing this! No offense D and D lovers.

Get you character created and continue on….

Choose a character class. You would normally see Ogre, dwarf, warrior but here they are replaced with hysterical stereo typical classes like a Seal clubber, Turtle Tamer or Disco bandit!free online adventure single player rpg games

Once you are ready to play you will have a set number of turns to go on quests, solve puzzles and have fun!

Next up is Darkness Springs. Head on over to their site and create a new character. Your appearance can be any of the following:

Choose you type and continue right into the flash based graphical game like so:

Your tool bar is at the bottom you can move by clicking with your mouse where you want to move to. Click on the sword to bring up your inventory and this screen

You see that you can learn spells, hold items and weapons. The shortcut key for this screen is I. You have the ability to create and rule your own realms, maps and quests. Some of their features are:

  • Can be played directly in the browser, nothing to install. (Reported to work on PC, Mac and Linux)
  • More than 100 maps in the default realm – dungeons, forests, villages, cities, secret caves and others
  • More than 2000 items, including magic and unique ones
  • 8 trainable skills, 4 trainable attributes
