Google Wave: Experience the Google Tide

Posted: 05 Nov 2009 08:19 AM PST

It's been some time since Google Wave has been launched and the net is still abuzz with Google Wave news. We at Blogsolute finally got our hands on Google Wave Developer's Preview and immediately we started playing with it. In this series, we present our readers, a preview of Google Wave that has not yet been released.

For Starters, Google Wave is a real time personal collaboration and communication client. It has been developed using Google Web Toolkit. So enough with the talks, let us start riding the [Google] Wave.

To start with, this is the screen that invites when you log into your Google Wave account. The left navigation bar is divided into the Navigation Bar and contacts. The Inbox lies in the middle and to the extreme right is the Wave view window.

Google Wave Home Screen

Let us start by creating a new wave by clicking on the option. The first line of the wave is the title for the wave. To add participants to a certain wave, you can click on the '+' sign and add contacts in the participants list. You can also add them by dragging contacts from the contacts list.

Starting a New wave opens up a new composer something alike to the one we see on Gmail. Let us start by sharing a video with my contacts. I copy the URL, paste it on the wave and click on the Embed video option and *drum roll* the video has been embedded. Click on Done to share the Wave with your participants. Even before clicking on Done, Online Contacts can see the link due to the real time feature.

Embedding Video on Google Wave

When the wave has been shared, you can see a control panel on the top with certain buttons like Reply (self-explanatory) and so on… .Your participants can comment on the wave by clicking on the reply button.

Continuing Discussion

It all happens in real-time i.e. you will be able to watch what your friend is typing as he types on his screen . A Special feature is the "Playback option" that lets any participant of the wave preview what happened before he saw the wave.

Additionally you can tag the waves and also can add files to it. You can see the controls for it.

Google wave supports Gadgets too which can be developed using Google Web Toolkit. You can embed a Google Wave onto your blog too. Your users can reply in the Wave embedded in the blog.

Blogsolute Verdict :

Even Though Google Wave has generated quite a buzz , we think it is sheer marketing technique that has caused so. The Real Time feature which interests everyone already exists with Google Documents. ( Tip : Try sharing your Google Document with your friends, the editing too happens in real time ) .The Wave embedding feature in blog sounds a good idea.

Companies like Novell are planning to use Google Wave for employee Interaction too. Although an innovative product , the real potential can be estimated only after certain features are added and Wave goes public. So for the time-being , we will have to wait and watch.
